Excel Artist Oleksiy Say
Oleksiy Say is a phenomenon on the
Ukrainian art scene. He’s possibly the only Ukrainian artists whose art
can be called truly ‘contemporary’. He’s a pioneer in his field, and
what’s more, American and European collectors are highly interested in
his work. What’s On thought it high time to sit down with this very
talented guy, asking about his art and asking the most important
question: how does he do it?

Venerable A Capella Choir
Concert, International Centre of Culture and Art (1 Institutska), 18 January at 19.00
Pikkardiyska
Tertsiya is probably the most successful male a capella group in
Ukraine, and the outfit is something of a local legend. The choir got
its start in 1992 as a quartet, but later added two more members in
order to achieve a fuller musical palette and sing a greater variety of
songs. To celebrate their 15 years of great singing, Pikkardiyska
Tertsiya will perform in Kyiv, proving once again to us locals that the
human voice is the world’s best instrument.

A Mediterranean Breeze From L’Accente
L’Accente is one of the most
luxurious restaurants in a Ukrainian capital that doesn’t lack for
culinary luxury. Even though it only swung open its doors on 15 May,
it’s become a huge hit fast. Like all new restaurants in these parts,
it kicked off with a huge VIP party, on which the city’s beau monde
descended to chit chat and elegantly snack. Recently there have been
some changes and innovations there, so we dropped in for a look.
I
first visited L’Accente to do a review a long time ago, but since then
my recent visits have been less about eating food and more connected
with huge parties or presentations on the restaurant’s premises. The
L’Accente management decided to continue the tradition of holding cool
VIP parties that it founded with its opening bash, and now throws
similar get-togethers from time to time. Ukrainian celebrities
definitely seem to like the place, since they pack into the restaurant
whenever one of the parties is going on.

Loboda Lover Tries Suicide on Stage
How’s this for strange? One of the performers in the Star Factory 2 pop
concerts that local show business celebrity Natalia Mohilevska is
presenting apparently tried to kill himself at a recent show at Palace
Ukraine – all because Svetlana Loboda had spurned him. Singer Maxim
Barsky took the stage to sing a new song, announced that the tune was
dedicated to “a girl I really love, Sveta,” started to sing and then
produced a knife and proceeded to slash his wrist.

What’s On: Read All Over the World (?48)
It’s time for yet another installment in our
drawing-to-a-close-early-next-year What’s On Read All Over the World
Contest, in which our readers send us photos of Kyiv’s best magazine
being, well, read all over the world. The prize? Two return tickets to
anywhere you want on Ukraine International Airlines. Our entry this
week is from Chris and Marika Jose, and depicts Marika reading our
illustrious publication to Emma the Elephant in Indonesia. Presumably
the elephant knows English, or else Marika’s translating the text into
one of Indonesia’s 200 languages.

| Was ist Das!?! | |
|
Every week we publish an unusual view of a well-known Kyiv landmark or architectural element. If you think you know what it is, write in to whatson@tmu.in.ua and you might get a mention in next week’s issue! Last week’s WAS IST DAS!?! was the arch of the Golden Gate, that central landmark beloved of the Russian composer Mussorgsky (who named part of his Pictures at an Exhibition after it) and hordes of beer-drinking kids on warm nights. Thanks to Andriy Nedzelnitsky for getting the answer right and writing in.

A Innovative New Year’s Eve with SE:SA
SE:SA in concert, Barsky club (5 Chervonoarmiyska), 31 December at 23.00
SE:SA, with their unusual name, is a side-project out of the Syke’n’Sugarstarr camp, headed by the producer-honcho Serhat Sakin. But – SE:SA is not only a studio-project. They’re also touring the club scene worldwide as a DJ duo. And their most appealing aspect is just how fresh they sound while DJ’ing, which, as anyone who has seen them on the decks will know, is as diverse and experimental as their studio work. The best way to describe them would probably be as musical pioneers, which, in this age of copyists and covers merchants, is exactly what the world needs right now. Admission fee for ladies – 100 hrv, for gentlemen – 300 hrv. For more information call 496-0606.
