A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

Young Einsteins - Kyiv Kids
With news of Ilya Kovalevskiy, an 8th grade student in Kyiv winning one of 20 awards at the recent annual world programming Google Code-In 2012 competition hitting the wire, it seemed appropriate to re-introduce you to a few students who won some pretty big awards in the world of science just last year. They are the countrys newest and most eminent scientists, and all of them are still in grade school.

There was a time when everyone was in a boy band remember 98 Degrees? BTK? 2GE+HER??? Yes, that was a fascinating time in music. Interestingly, the dying trend has yet to catch up in Russia, with the Ivanushki trio still pumping out hits left, right and centre. Celebrating 19 years together, the boys now men started melting hearts back in 1994, and have since produced five albums, shot several videos and played thousands of concerts. All grown up and ready to talk about love, expect more of the same, just with lower voices.


Lambert Leaves Queen at Home - Coming Soon

Revered 2009 American Idol star Adam Lambert is already a favourite here in Ukraine, having made an appearance during Euro 2012 with Queen and Elton John on the open stage of Maidan. In order to get tickets then, you had to know somebody who knew somebody who had an in with the dog-walker. This time, theyre open to all, but they aint cheap. Love him or hate for his flamboyant performance both on and off the stage, his two albums have been released to wide acclaim, winning him awards and Grammy nominations in the process. Hes certainly a super star in the making, if he isnt one already.


Women in Art - Coming Soon
Yin exhibition of works by Ukrainian female artists, M17 Gallery (Antonovycha 102-104), From 28 February
People have different attitudes when it comes to 8 March some reject it as a purely Soviet invention, while others enjoy the traditional day off, ready for gifts, flowers and the general doting. M17 uses the holiday as inspiration for their upcoming exhibition.

La Bayadere with Nina Ananiashvili and Denys Matviyenko (ballet in 3 acts), National Opera Theatre of Ukraine (Volodymyrska 50), 12 March at 19.00
The spring brings with it a number of fascinating ballet performances, one of which is the newly staged La Bayadere. As many in these parts know, the female role in this ballet was often performed by the legendary Russian prima Natalya Makarova, who put her own spin on things back in the day.


Brother Thomas Gives Birthday Gig - Coming Soon

Modern Talking frontman Thomas Anders is making his way to Kyiv next month, with a concert in dedication to his 50th birthday. Extremely popular in the 80s and 90s, the pop duo cornered the market on cheesy love songs, many of which are still played (and loved) here in Ukraine, such as Youre My Heart, Youre My Soul, Cheri, Cheri Lady and Brother Louie. Releasing their final album in 2003, both Thomas Anders and Dieter Bohlen have continued to tour the world with their special brand of synthpop.

Is life lacking a little substance lately? Weve got the solution the Burlesque Cabaret! Getting together some of the countrys sexiest girls, show songs from world famous musicals Chicago, Moulin Rouge, Cabaret, and more await. Its going to be a night of big hair, outrageous makeup, showy costumes and extravagant girls, and all in time for Red Army Day.

Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
