Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

From THE EDITOR (34) - Editorial
Ive lived in Kyiv for well over five years now, but until the weekend Id never been to the Kyiv Sea. I cant really explain why this has happened, as Ive travelled a lot around Ukraine, so to not have visited this massive expanse of water that so many people talk about is really inexcusable. However, having been invited to the Windmaster Regatta at the weekend, I had the chance to finally right this wrong. And I was impressed. Looking at it on a map, you definitely dont get the sense of just how big this reservoir is. It was a beautiful day with clear blue skies and warm sunshine, so it made it all the more beautiful to me. For reasons I wont go into, we were late getting to the yacht club where the boats were to launch from, and wed missed the chance to take part in the race as the boats were already well out on the course when we arrived.

Lutsenko Sick inPrison - Whats Up?
With all the focus on the Tymoshenko trial, poor former interior minister Yuriy Lutsenko does not have a spotlight on him. And thats not good, because hes not doing very well. Hes been languishing in prison since 26 December last year. Initially charged with abuse of power, he was incarcerated amid claims of deliberately delaying court proceedings. His trial was highly publicised until Tymoshenko was charged, and since then his case has received little to no attention.

There is No News About Epicentre - Whats Up?
On the afternoon of 7 September local news websites told that the head office of the countrys largest home improvements retailer Epicentre had been raided by masked men thought to be the elite squad of the SBU. Reports said that all 150 employees were being detained and that their mobile phones had been confiscated.

Police Confiscate T-Shirts - Whats Up?
Anyone whos been to a Dynamo game recently will have heard the fans chant the very humourous: Thank you citizens of Donbass for the president who is (We cant finish the phrase because the law prohibits us drawing into question the sexuality of any individual without evidence.) A screen printer in the city, Denys Oleinikov and his company Prostoprint, was so taken by the chant he started printing t-shirts bearing the phrase. Unfortunately, the authorities didnt see the funny side and on 6 September his business was raided by police who confiscated all the offending materials.

No Time Change This Year? - Whats Up?
As with most countries around the world, Ukraine changes the time twice a year. It is a practice that few people understand anywhere in the world, and which has bamboozled all of us whove seen a few winters out in Ukraine because while it means it gets light quite early in the morning, it also means it starts getting dark mid afternoon. And thats kind of depressing.

Can the Left Hand Please Introduce Itself to the Right Hand? - Whats Up?
Sooty and Sweep (google it if youre not British), Laurel and Hardy, Abbot and Costello, Cheech and Chong, French and Saunders, and Morecambe and Wise are all well known comedy acts who often relied heavily on miscommunication between them to make us laugh. And so we should laugh heartily at the actions this weekend of the World of Comedys latest laugh-a-minute double act Yanukovych and Azarov.

Britney Til the World Ends - Kyiv Celebrities
There are lots of reasons this next concert by Britney Spears is going to sell out. The one you need concern yourselves most with is that shes hot. And were not talking babas borsch kind of hot.
Britney Spears. Shes as sweet as cotton candy with a tooth-aching voice to match. Despite that, the world is in love with this home-grown American girl next door. Part of it has to do with her being in the spotlight ever since she was out of diapers.

Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
