Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

From THE EDITOR (33) - Editorial
As I write this, its been announced that Tymoshenkos trial has been adjourned until 27 September. Some reports say this is to allow Tymoshenko prepare her defence, while others say its deliberation time for the judges. Either way, its clear the trial is coming to an end, and its going to be fascinating to see the result. Its quite clear, especially after the EU foreign ministers got verbose on the subject last week, that the presidential administration is wondering how it can dig itself out of the hole its put itself in. The judges can only come to one of two verdicts, and we all know theyve already been told to which verdict they must arrive. But which one will that be? In my humble opinion, they cannot now sentence her to time in prison. This, I think Yanukovych now realises, would damage his international reputation irreparably.

Ukrainian Blonde Causes Trouble on the Roads - Whats Up?
Having often been witness to young blondes driving huge and ridiculously expensive cars (and driving them very badly) in Kyiv, this next story did not come as much of a surprise. According to reports in the press, the lovely Margarita Smelyanska (a blonde from Odesa) caused one of the most expensive accidents ever.
While scooting about in her Bentley (a present from a rich boyfriend apparently) in Monaco last week, she, so witnesses declare, appeared to mistake the accelerator for the brake and slammed her big motor into two extremely expensive parked cars.

Ukrainian Beer Baths - Whats Up?
Ukraine is famous for some of the worlds most offbeat therapeutic remedies, and we here at Whats On just discovered another one. It seems the Medobory Sanatorium, just a hop, skip and a jump outside of Ternopil, is offering up the not-quite FDA-approved beer baths to anyone with a kidney problem and a little imagination. Also aiding in digestion, Medobory suggests you will not only come away with a rejuvenated complexion but that the yeast bacteria found in the quaff generates a rather amiable and relaxed disposition.

Paris Attacked in Kyiv - Whats Up?
No, its not a racial incident, but what appears to be more of a catfight between the worlds biggest brat and Ukraines very own version of feminism. Super silly socialite, Paris Hilton was in town over the weekend to act as a judge in the Miss Ukraine competition, and were sure she thought it was just another fat appearance fee for her. But FEMEN had other ideas, and during the press conference a member of these strangest of feminists ran to the stage, tearing her clothes off. exposing her breasts and shouting: Model dont go to brothel.

Ukrainian Musician Speaks Out - Whats Up?
Whether they want to be or not, Ukrainian musicians seem to be at the front of much political commotion as of late. Take for example the Peoples Artist of Ukraine, Pavlo Zibrov, the writer and singer of the song, Yednaymoisya, whos had to write a letter of apology to Kyiv residents. You might not know his name, nor the name of the song either, but if youve been near Khreshchatyk any time in the past couple of months, youll definitely know the rousing melody.

Russia Unhappy with Yanukovych - Whats Up?
When Yanukovych first came to power, many thought his first moves regarding foreign policy would be to realign the country with Russia, and ties to the EU would become strained. Indeed, he had almost everyone up in arms when he and Azarov signed a gas deal with Putin that included a 25-year extension to Russias lease of the Black Sea Fleet base in Sevastopil.

Blue, Yellow and Green? - Ukraine Today
Green is the new black. And were not talking about fashion. The world is plying Ukraine with money to help the country instigate green energy initiatives, to improve energy efficiency and to wean itself off dirty carbons. We wondered what the money would be spent on, and how such a change would be received in a country so used to waste. Does Ukraine really do efficiency? Can a few solar panels and the odd dam end its energy gluttony? Whats On turned off the lights, lit a candle and, over a pint of nettle tea, asked whether the greens could really barge in on the blue and yellow party.

Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
