A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels
With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidan’s three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the country’s stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

 Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard – and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk
People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

From THE EDITOR (31) - Editorial
 My vacation this summer was in Sri Lanka – a beautiful country with excellent beaches, stunning mountain scenes, interesting people, a strong kinda Zen thing going on (lots of Buddhists and an incredible number of Buddhas), and (for the purposes of this editorial) well surfaced roads. That’s right, this small island country in the Indian Ocean which could well, in many ways, be referred to as Third World (if we still use that expression) has windy (it’s all coast and mountains) but good roads. Much better than those in Ukraine! How can that be? Now, we have to be fair, no matter how much we despise the big galloot, there are some things getting done in this area. As I wrote a few weeks ago, there’s a brand new Lesi Ukrainka complete with walkway and park benches up the middle, the flyover at Moskovska Ploscha was finally completed a couple of months back, and other road surfaces are being renewed as we speak.

| New Skate Park for Kyiv - Whats Up?
 Independence Day offered some excellent PR opportunities for the country’s politicians and unelected head of the Kyiv City Administration wasn’t going to pass up the chance. Gathering as many of the country’s press as he possibly could, he boasted loudly about the opening of Kyiv’s first skate park.
During the opening ceremony there was ribbon cutting, an official delegation, the whole shebang! Once opened the press stepped forward to take a closer look and were all suitably unimpressed.

| IMF and PM Contradict Each Other - Whats Up?
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has postponed its visit to Ukraine planned for next week until October, stating it wanted to see “strong policies” from the government before it’s prepared to resume its $15.6 billion bailout package. At the same time Prime Minsiter Azarov issued a statement declaring there are no obstacles to obtaining the next tranche of the loan. Now, which one do you believe?

| Yanukovych Calls for Closer Ties with Europe - Whats Up?
 The big man’s at it again, this time in an editorial published in the Wall Street Journal. In the editorial, he declares that the Ukraine’s historical ties with Russia are important, but its future depends on closer ties with the European UNI0N.
In the editorial published the day following Ukraine’s Independence Day celebrations, he went on to say he fully intends to set Ukraine on the path to becoming a full member of the EU.

| The Cost of a Bottle of Vodka - Whats Up?
 Vodka! It’s great stuff, isn’t it? Warms the cockles of your heart on a cold day, eases the woes of the world, removes inhibitions, and, when drunk in large quantities along with beer, makes you do things that will have you swearing off it for life! It’s part and parcel of life here in Kyiv, and that’s how it should be. It’s a tradition! A part of the people! We love the stuff!
But those who make it and their friends in high places decided recently that we should pay more for it. The Verkhovna Rada, apparently under pressure from the vodka producers (many of whom are lawmakers themselves), decided to raise the minimum retail price for a half-litre of vodka by almost 50% to 26.10hrv.

| Behind Bars Or Worse! - Ukraine History
 The unbearably loud court cases taking place in Ukraine at the moment, which involve both Lutsenko and Tymoshenko, are shaking up the entire international community. Even with our windows closed, locked and boarded shut, there is no escaping the awful racket that occurs down below. A barbaric and unjust system of justice once controlled the people of this land, and it would seem fair to say there has been little done to change it today. Which got us thinking, which other Ukrainians other than Tymoshenko and Lutsenko have spent time behind bars for political reasons?

Rights We Didn’t Know We Had
Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they don’t understand the meaning of these words.

Pulling Strings
 Located on Hrushevskoho Street – the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades – children’s favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. What’s On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
