Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

From THE EDITOR (30) - Editorial
Well, were back from vacation. Did you miss us? We missed you. Were glad of the break, however, as its given us time to recharge our batteries, and now were back were ready to rock n roll once again. And I want to start back with some very good news. Ill talk about the vacation next week, but this week I want to talk about something that happened before I went. Before I left to head off on holiday, I realised at the last minute that I needed another pair of shorts. This filled me with dismay as this meant I would have to buy them in Kyiv, and I never buy clothes in Kyiv. Well, why would I when everything is so ridiculously expensive here? But in this instance, left with no choice, I headed down to Kreshchatyk and started badtemperedly wandering from shop to shop, doubtful Id find something I liked while knowing Id have to pay well over the odds for it.

An Egg for Kirkorov - Whats Up?
An interesting story appeared in UNIAN recently. Apparently, according to the site, the popular Ukrainian singer Kamaliya will donate her eggs to well-known Russian singer Kirkorov, to help him become a father (yes, that type of egg). Kamaliya and Kirkorov often sing together and their professional co-operation has meant that theyve developed a close friendship. How did the subject come up in conversation? During a dinner in Yalta last week, when Kirkorov told her about his dreams of having a child. Kamaliya admits Kirkorov first asked her half a year ago, but initially she refused. Undeterred, Kirkorov persisted, not least because he wanted a baby from a beautiful woman.

Tymoshenko in Jail - Whats Up?
Yes, we know were late on this one, but weve been on vacation, so what do you expect? And its just such a good story, we couldnt let it pass without commenting. It seems the cat and mouse game between Yulia and President Viktor Yanukovych is becoming more serious, the stakes are getting higher, and the game play is getting more and more idiotic.
Of course, Yanukovych denies the trial is politically motivated, claiming instead it is purely legitimate. But none of us are idiots like he is, and it is quite clear the charges would be dropped and the cases dismissed if she promised to step down from politics and never stand for president again.

All the Way from the End of the World - My Kyiv
Many people associate Portugal with golf, Madeira wine, Jose Mourinho and the financial crisis. Whats On recently met with His Excellency the Ambassador of Portugal to Ukraine, Mario Jesus dos Santos, and found our perceptions changed. It turns out that what we should really associate it with is cement, medical fabric and liquid fuel containers

Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
