Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

From THE EDITOR (28) - Editorial
Ive been living in Kyiv for many years now, but the town and its people and what they both have to offer never ceases to amaze me. Sometimes the amazement is over something big, sometimes over something trivial, but if one is left amazed, nothing is ever trivial. I was out shopping at the weekend for new electrical appliances (and the service we came across in Foxtrot where we finally purchased all we were wanting was exceptional, but while that was pretty amazing, it wasnt the amazing experience to which I was initially referring), and after wed dumped our purchases in the car, we took a moment to wander amongst the street vendors to pick up some organic veggies. Amongst them was a pair of boys with a bag full of crawling things. This caused a lot of excitement in my companion who declared: Oooh look, river lobsters!"

Ukrainian Movie Making Goes 3D - Whats Up?
Ukraine is going high tech when it comes to movie making, as filming is about to begin in the Carpathians on a new 3D horror movie, Synevyr. The title of the film is taken after the eponymous lake, which, ironically for a horror movie, is renowned as one of Ukraines most beautiful spots. Located at a height of almost 1,000 metres up in the mountains, the lake has numerous romantic myths and legends surrounding it, which may well have inspired the directors, the Alyoshechkin Brothers, and producer Volodymyr Khorunzhuy.

58 New HIV Cases Every Day inUkraine! - Whats Up?
According to the latest statistics from the Ukrainian HIV prevention and control centre, a shocking 58 Ukrainians get infected with HIV every single day. And whats more shocking is that the majority of those infected are young, heterosexuals who do not use drugs.
The biggest problem, according to the centre, is that most do not know theyre infected, and therefore feel no need to use protection, and this is allowing the virus to spread at a frightening rate.

Ukrainian Brides for Sale! - Whats Up?
Do you want a Ukrainian bride? Well forget those expensive dates, flowers, and presents! Now all you have to do is pop down to Troeshchyna market and pick up a bride for $500.
And its a bit of a turn up for the books, because if we listen to stereotypes wed think that its the Ukrainian brides whore looking for a different passport. But apparently men from China, Africa and Asia really want to live in Ukraine, and the easiest way to do it is to marry a local girl and be registered at her apartment.
The government doesnt seem to have caught on to the idea of illegal immigration by such means, maybe because theyre rather dumbfounded by the idea that people would actually want to come and live here when so many of the countrys population wants to leave.

EBRD and EIB Finance Gas Transit System - Whats Up?
Always seems the best stories in Ukraine are about the corrupt government, EU membership, or gas. And this one, once again, is about gas. Who would ever have thought gas could be so interesting? But here in Ukraine its fascinating, what with all the chess-like play with Russia over import prices and transit, and the EU getting left out in the cold occasionally because of it all.

Ukraines Chances for EU Membership - Whats Up?
We here at Whats On face life with optimism, and always have, especially when it comes to EU membership for Ukraine. We know very well how strong the urge to travel is, and how hard it can be for Ukrainians to do so. EU membership for the country would make travel for its citizens a whole lot easier, and make everyone feel part of the integrated western world.
Wed also like to think that EU membership would cut down on corruption, but looking at some member states, thats not necessarily true.

That je ne sais quoi - Ukraine Abroad
Dominique Strauss-Kahn, Frenchman and former Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), thought of himself as a bit of a ladys man. He was arrested and replaced, and now stands accused of taking his desire for women far too far. But despite this, Whats On still believes charm can work wonders. We believe that, if used well, charm can get you what you want, and that got us thinking Mr Strauss-Kahns successor is a lady, President Yanukovich is a man. Ukraine needs IMF money, and the new IMF chief, Christine Lagarde, now holds the purse-strings. We decided to offer Viktor a friendly letter of advice on how to woo The Lady in the hope it will increase his chances of getting the money Ukraine so badly needs.

Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Kyiv Culture

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
