Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

From THE EDITOR (24) - Editorial
Some people have commented that I write about the weather too much, and while I disagree (explaining that its only ever mentioned when it coincides with a transition of seasons within the year and therefore the events one can participate in for example, its snowing so now its time to go skiing, or summer has come so its time to get down to the beach), I am going to start this weeks letter by saying that as I write, it has rained consistently (at times torrentially) for the past four days. And apparently its set to continue for a while. This is weather Ive never seen before in Kyiv (or even in my home country of Scotland where even during the worst rainy spells, it stops every once in a while, if only for a few minutes), and therefore, I thought it was worth commenting on. Because what do you do in Kyiv when it doesnt stop raining?

Ukraines Bare Bones - Whats Up?
There are those that doubt the all-knowing and wise Ukrainian babushka. However, with this latest discovery of 32,000 year old bones found in the Buran-Kaya cave-site of the Crimean mountains, perhaps Doubting Thomases neednt doubt the age-old intelligence that exists in this part of the country at all.  It seems Archaeologist Dr Oleksandr Yanevich from the National Ukrainian Academy of Science in Kyiv discovered the four Buran-Kaya caves in the Crimean Mountains in 1991, and since then, roughly two hundred human bone fragments have been unearthed at the site. Shards of human bones and teeth have been found, as have ornaments made of ivory and animal remains, which researchers were able to directly date using radio-carbon techniques.

Azarov Appears to Miss the Hypocrisy - Whats Up?
In what has to be one of the biggest pot and kettle situations in history, Azarov once again is saying that the current gas deal with Russia is unfair (thats the one he negotiated, extending Russias lease on Sevastopil for another 25 years), while Tymoshenko goes on trial for much the same thing.

Tymoshenko on Trial - Whats Up?
On Friday morning the Whats On team struggled to enter our offices on Kreshchatyk due to massive crowds of people waiving BYuT banners. In fact, the street itself had been cordoned off, and the pavements were full with a great mass of unwashed paid protestors. Not only that, the police had set barriers on the pavement near our office in order to control the crowd, so the only way we could gain access was by coming in the back way from Pushkinska.
At first sight it looked as if another Orange Revolution might be in the offing, but upon closer inspection (with both eyes and nose) it was clear the protestors causing all the disruption were not horrified residents hoping to right a wrong, but the type of protestors who will stand all day holding a placard for 50hrv and a couple of shots of vodka.

The Burning Loins of Love - Kyiv Culture
As one of the most esoteric of traditions, Ukraine continues to celebrate the summer solstice each year with grace and beauty. Strip down to your skivvies, take a dip in the lake and then dry off whilst dancing like madmen around the bonfire. Ivana Kupala is an evening you wont forget anytime soon!
If we go back in time, we find Kupala has long been a Slavic celebration. Its history has long been connected with its Pagan origins which underwent numerous attempts at suppression by the induction of Christianity into Kyivska Rus. It was to no avail, however. And as the old saying goes, if you cant beat em, join em, which is exactly what happened.

Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Kyiv Culture

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
