Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

From THE EDITOR (19) - Editorial
Excuse me while I get a little philosophical this week (first time in a while I think), but I returned to Scotland last week for the first time since my Dad died, and it was not an easy time. It first struck me as I was on the plane  and I started thinking of the things I wanted to tell him, forgetting for a moment he wasnt there. Then getting home and seeing my Mum trying to live alone in the house she shared with him for so many years (my siblings and I have tried to persuade her to move, while fully understanding all her reasons for not wanting to), was very sad as Id see her turn to where he should be sitting beside her on the sofa to tell him something, then her eyes fill with tears. One of the most difficult things in life is when the people you love leave.

Kyiv To Smarten Itself Up Euro-2012 - Whats Up?
Kyivs City Council is beginning to take notice of the capitals appearance, with Euro-2012 approaching rapidly.  With that in mind, the council has banned any new billboards in the city centre until 1 September. Justice Served Cold. Like Revenge - Whats Up?
The Ukrainian justice (*cough*) system seems to be working overtime these days.  There have been the weekly interrogations of former PM Yulia Tymoshenko in relation to corruption and misappropriation of public funds. Now, former Interior Minister, Orange Revolution field commander and political wanderer Yuriy Lutsenko jailed since December 2010 finally had a day in court, on Monday 23 May. On a hunger strike since April 22, Lutsenko was visibly thinner than his previously robust self.  Unbowed, he showed no sign of giving up, in what he sees as a case of political revenge against him on the part of the ruling Party of Regions. According to the Lutsenko camp, this is simply a case of payback for his pursuit of Regions high-flyers as Boris Kolesnikov and his stern opposition to President Viktor Yanukovich himself.

Matriarchs and Mullets - Cover Story
Weve all been there at one point passing the border to Ukraine for the first time full of excitement, trepidation, and perhaps even a little fear. Those of us whove been here for a long time have probably forgotten the eye-bulging wonder we experienced when we first arrived here, but newbies turn up here everyday (some by choice, some by force, some by complete accident), and to witness their awe and confusion brings memories of our own early days flooding back. So when we came across a blog by a young chap recently arrived, we asked him to tell us about his first ten days.

Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
