Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

From THE EDITOR (3) - Editorial
Returning to Kyiv at the weekend from a trip home to Scotland, I realised, as the plane landed at Boryspil, that I was glad to be home. Yes, thats right home! Its a very strange thing for me, to call Kyiv home, because previously sometimes I dreaded coming back, but this time I actually found myself looking forward to coming home. Having returned from giving thanks for the life of the man most important to me, I decided there and then that this weeks letter would be dedicated to giving thanks for all the things I love about Kyiv. But then I picked up a copy of the Kyiv Post, and was dismayed to see its main story was about just that, but then I read it and saw they could only think of ten good things. So safe in the knowledge nobody reads that newspaper anyway, I decided to go ahead with my original decision and list all the things I love about Ukraine, starting with arrival I love the Ukrainian border guards who often ask lots of questions, unable to understand the answers;

It seems that the new government just keeps bringing in new legislation, and that new legislation keeps upsetting someone or other. New Club for Kyiv from Italian Designer - Whats Up?
If reports in the press are to be believed, it would appear that Ukrainian girls can turn your head, even at the age of 70! And they certainly seem to have done just that to the head of legendary Italian fashion designer, Roberto Cavalli, as why else would he want to open his own club in Ukraines capital if not to meet our delectable delights.
Yes, thats right, the seventy-year-old designer plans to open a night club in Kyiv this year, and the high class Cavalli Club will not only contain a club, but a restaurant, a concert hall and an exhibition hall which it is hoped will host fashion shows.

Yanukovych Embarrasses Ukraine in Davos - Whats Up?
You gotta love him and his shambolic use of the Ukrainian language, and his latest invitation he issued to the world at Davos while giving a speech at a Ukrainian lunch there hosted by Viktor Pinchuk is likely to have throngs of people coming to the country in 2012. Unfortunately, however, those throngs are likely to be sex-pats rather than football fans. After talking about inward investment, and the fact the country has more to offer than just salo and borsch, he announced a new slogan for the EURO 2012 football championships Switch on Ukraine.

The Power of the Press - Ukraine Today
During more formative years, I was often told, Knowledge is power. And while sources may come in many different forms in this, the 21st century, the tenet remains as true today as it did all those years ago. There is a different concern today, however. The most important of which is where is the information coming from and are those sources reliable?

Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
