Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

From THE EDITOR (1) - Editorial
Welcome to the first issue of Whats On of 2011. I beg your indulgence this one time while I write something a little different than that which this time of year dictates, as life (and death for that matter) does not pay attention to celebrations. My Dad, Alexander Sandy Campbell, died on Sunday, and I know I am not the only one who lost someone during or close to the holiday season, and therefore that is my subject this week. While he had been suffering from a terminal lung disease for some time, the end still came suddenly, and I did not get the chance to say goodbye to him. He was, as fathers always are, a very important figure in my life. In these times of mass media and movies, its almost impossible to say something unique about someone, but my Da was one of a kind.

Kyiv Prepares for Major Euro 2012 Tourism Influx - Whats Up?
The Kyiv City Administration seems intent on presenting a friendly face for all foreign and local guests of the Euro 2012 football championships. Part of their plan is to make available two universal, so-called all-inclusive tickets for matches and transportation in tournament host cities. The first type of universal ticket will include entrance to the fans preferred match, accommodation in a hotel of his/her choosing and a local tour excursion. The other universal ticket will allow users to access all kinds of public transport, meaning foreign guests wont be confused with tokens, talonchiki (public transport tickets) or when a stranger taps them on the back of the shoulder in a crowded marshrutka and hands them money in that nonchalant manner were all accustomed to here.

Testing Begun on Tonic for Anemic City Health Services - Whats Up?
Since the start of 2011, the City of Kyiv has begun employing a type of healthcare tonic a special reception desk for patients that aims to provide a type of readily available, on-the-spot medical insurance for Kyiv residents and guests of the capital. The newly opened Hospital Desk in city hospitals should go a long way toward improving medical service provision in Kyiv and curb the practice of hospital medical personnel requiring (demanding?) cold, hard cash in exchange for services.

Police Harassment: Watch those Hugs and Hemlines - Whats Up?
Its no secret that the situation in Ukraine in respect of human rights remains at a Third World level, certainly not one befitting a nation aspiring to join the rest of civilised Europe. And despite recent pronouncements by Interior Ministry officials, policing in the country is abominable, with many police officers not merely failing to protect the rights of other citizens, but often lacking the common sense to use discretion where it is needed if not actually perpetrating criminal activity themselves.

The EU has expressed concern over the ongoing persecution of opposition politicians in Ukraine that started in earnest last December against former members of Yulia Tymoshenkos cabinet.

A New Tax Code for The New Year - Ukraine Today
The long-awaited and greatly disputed Tax Code of Ukraine (TCU) came into effect on 1 January this year, and while some provisions will only become effective later in the year (such as Section III, dealing with corporate income tax which comes into force on 1 April), the law is far-reaching with consequences that will affect everyone. If youre not quite sure of all the changes the new TCU will impose on taxpayers in the country, read on

Free Hugs for All! - Special Feature
We here at Whats On would like to wish you Happy Hug Day! Never heard of such a celebration? Well then were pleased to inform you that the International Day of the Hug will take place on 21 January! I bet we have you wondering why people in Ukraine have started to pay more attention to such a festive occasion. We too were curious, but psychologists say that hugs are a healthy way to express your feelings and make the person you are hugging feel good too.

Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
