Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

From THE EDITOR (45) - Editorial
As many of you may have gathered from previous letters, I like beer. No, actually, thats not true I LOVE beer. I particularly like Ukrainian beer, and Chernihivske is, so far, the best beer Ive ever tried (and Ive tried a lot). I like to drink beer in the company of friends, and during the summer the best place to do so is, of course, one of the many summer terraces. However, it is not summer now. It is winter. And you might think this presents a problem, but it does not, because in all truth, my favourite places to drink beer with friends are basement bars. Why? I hear you ask. Because theres something cosy, warm and joyous about such places. It might be minus 20 outside and the streets might be thick with snow and ice, or it might be pouring with rain, but none of that matters when youre tucked away underground, sipping beer, and chatting and laughing with friends.

Yanukovych Vetoes Tax Bill - Whats Up?
It may be a long time after the Orange Revolution, but this one just goes to show protesting still has an effect on government. Certainly, the throngs of small and medium business owners who took to the streets across the country to protest against the new tax code recently passed by the Verkhovna Rada have, it seems, been heard.
President Viktor Yanukovych announced on Tuesday that he had vetoed the new tax. Today, I vetoed the tax code, he told journalists at Boryspil Airport before boarding a plane to Astana for an OSCE Summit.

Gaddafis Ukrainian Nurse - Whats Up?
Theres been a lot of hype in the run up to Wikileaks' latest release of a massive amount of confidential data, with all sorts of debates taking place over whether this website that makes public secret information is legitimately letting the public know whats going on, or is outrageously irresponsible and putting peoples lives in danger.
Well, we here at Whats On had a look, and the most interesting information we found is that Libyan leader Muammar al-Gadaffi goes everywhere with his Ukrainian nurse, Halyna Kolotnytska.

Where Have all the Boats Gone? - Whats Up?
One thing that makes Kyiv stand out from many a capital city is the river restaurants, hotels and clubs. Offering great views up and down the beautiful Dnipro, these places have always been very popular with locals and ex-pats alike. But take a stroll down the banks of the Dnipro these days and you will notice something strange all but a few of these landmarks have gone, and no ones quite sure why.
The first one of many to disappear was Murakami. On 8 July the militia appeared unannounced and ordered the removal of the floating restaurant. Officials said the restaurant did not have the proper permits, but lawyers representing the owners said they had not received any court injunction or any clear reason why the restaurant was removed.

Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
