Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

From THE EDITOR (42) - Editorial
I got my haircut the other day. Woohoo, I hear you say. And youd be right its not exactly an exciting occurrence. But it did highlight a certain flaw in local business mentality that bothers me at times. This was the third time Id used this particular hairdresser, and the first time I went the girl spent about an hour cutting and styling my hair (which included two washes, a blow dry, and careful attention to detail), at the end of which I was only charged 80hrv; the second time I went, the treatment was the same, but this time I was charged 100hrv; and this last time I was charged 100hrv again, but cutting time was cut (excuse the pun) to 35 minutes, there was only one wash, and nowhere near the same attention to detail.

Sofiyivska and Lavra Could be Removed from UNESCO List - Whats Up?
Francesco Bandarin, Deputy Director of UNESCO was in Ukraine last week to see how his sites were getting on, and he was not impressed by what he saw at Sofiyivska Cathedral or the Pechersk Lavra Monsatery. In fact, he was so unimpressed hes threatened to have the two sites removed from the UNESCO list.
The main problem he saw is that of new buildings being erected in the vicinity of these historic wonders, causing them untold damage.
After visiting the sites, Bandarin was swiftly escorted away from waiting journalists so that he could not answer what would probably have been embarrassing questions.

Volodymyr the Greats Skull Fragment Stolen in Canada - Whats Up?
Oh no! We hear you cry. But dont worry, it was recovered. Yes, according to a report in the Vancouver Sun, a fragment of Volodymyr (or Vladimir, as the Vancouver Sun has it. Tut tut!) the Greats skull, currently on a cross-country tour of Canada, was stolen at the weekend in Edmonton.
The 2.5 centimetre-square 1,000 year old fragment of the mans head, on loan from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, was stolen from a home in the town where the priest accompanying it on its grand tour was residing over the weekend.

A New Tourist Site for Kyiv - Whats Up?
While the city seems intent on destroying its two most popular historic sites (see right), its somehow managed to find the money to build a new albeit smaller and slightly less impressive one in the beautiful Pechersk Botanical Gardens.
The new tourist attraction is a little Kyiv Rus-style fortress with watch tower, which, due to its location high up in the park, offers impressive views out over the city and the Dnipro.

Not So Hot Water - Whats Up?
According to the IMF, everyone in Ukraine should be paying market prices for utilities, and the government, in order that it received the last tranche of its handout, agreed. However, if were going to pay market prices, surely we should get a reliable service, but we dont.
Last week, residents of three districts in Kyiv found that the hot water was, in fact, not hot at all but only lukewarm. This, of course, is better than the usual, no hot water at all, but with the water only being just hot enough to stand under in the shower without getting frostbite, it certainly wasnt a situation worth paying market prices for.

No Parliamentary Elections Next Year - Whats Up?
After all the shenanigans in last weeks local elections where the Party of Regions cleaned up, you might wonder how much further they might go to win an election. Well, while were not sure of the answer to that, they seem to have come up with a damn fine way of never losing one again dont have elections.
The last elections for the Verkhovna Rada were held on 30 September 2007, and that should mean that under the constitution adopted in 2004, there has to be an election by 30 September 2012. But, a few weeks back the government cancelled the 2004 constitution, reinstating one from 1996 which demands that elections need to be held every four years.

Londons Golden Girl - Kyiv Culture
The international radio hit, The Selector, is being launched in Kyiv at the beginning of next week. Hosted by one of Britains favourite DJs, Miss Goldierocks, it should be good. The girl will be coming to the capital, and throwing a bash in Heaven to kick it off on 13 November. Whats On hooked up with the adventurous girl in between flights from the Philippines for a quick but consonant chat.

Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Kyiv Culture

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
