Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

From THE EDITOR (40) - Editorial
Theres a saying that says no-one in LA is a barman, waitress, or teller, but theyre all actors between rolls. And its kinda like that here in Ukraine. With one big difference nearly everyone here has talent. I had the chance to take in some live music last week at a couple of the places that stage bands every night, and as always I was impressed by the quality of the musicianship and vocals. While it was just a three piece, the bass player raced up and down the neck with dexterity, the guitarist picked out some stunning solos, and the drummer rattled off some intricate offbeat rhythms. It was all very impressive. I had a chance to have a quick chat with them after the show, and found that one was a journalist, the other worked in a bank, and the other was a barman.

Ukraine Drops Dramatically in Freedom of Speech Index - Whats Up?
Since the new government took power, there have been repeated reports concerning the abuse of press freedoms in Ukraine, with many claiming the country has regressed years on this matter. And it would seem that the international press freedom watchdog, Reporters without Borders, agrees with this viewpoint as Ukraine has slipped 42 places on their rankings since last year.

Ukraine and ArcelorMittal to Find Compromise - Whats Up?
Were not usually ones to write about business in these pages, unless it indicates something general about the country, and this story does. Yanukovych is a difficult man to read these days, and while he shores up power around him amid accusations of diminishing press freedoms, he does seem to play it reasonably fair sometimes.
Last week he intervened in the case concerning ArcelorMittal, a foreign investor that owns the largest steel plant in Ukraine, and said that he and CEO Lakshmi Mittal would reach a solution on the companies investment commitments to Ukraine.

Disneyland in Kyiv? - Whats Up?
We announced last year, with our tongues firmly placed in our cheeks that there were plans afoot to get Kyiv its very own theme park. Our tongues were in our cheeks because we simply considered the idea to be a lot of hot air, and the plans would never come to fruition, but it seems now we may have to remove our tongues from our cheeks, because according to a recent report, construction will start on the park this year!
Located in Hydropark, the park, imaginatively to be called Hydroland, will cover 200,000 square metres and will contain over 40 state-of-the-art amusement rides including roller coasters, freefall towers, and lots of other adrenalin pumping affairs.

Russia Plans More Ships forSevastopil - Whats Up?
Yanukovych and his government seem intent on selling out Ukraines sovereignty, and the Russians seem intent on taking it. First, Ukraine did a deal with them for cheap gas in return for a 25-year extension of Russias lease of the naval base at Sevastopil, and then Ukraines government decided that the deal they got wasnt that good in the first place.

Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
