Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

From THE EDITOR (39) - Editorial
One thing I always find myself pondering over at this time of year is the communal heating. As soon as I hear the water gurgling through the pipes for the first time in the middle of October, it starts me wondering. I have to say, that as a socialist, it is one legacy of the Soviet UNI0N I really admire free hot water and heating for everyone, regardless of income. But then, I cant help but think of all the energy thats wasted as it is piped through the streets, and one things for sure, it leaves a capitalist government in an emerging democracy with one helluva headache: how can they start charging people market prices for it? While everyone, regardless of position, having hot water and heating is a wonderful thing, the sad fact of life is that it needs paying for.

Pinchuk One of the Most Influential People in Contemporary Art - Whats Up?
Viktor Pinchuk, what with his art centre and bringing people like Elton John, Paul McCartney and Queen to perform live, is desperately trying to legitimise himself with one of the biggest personal PR campaigns the world has ever seen.
And it seems like its worked as the British magazine, ArtReview, has placed him at 37 on their list of most influential people in contemporary art, up from 53rd place the previous year.
ArtReview publishes its Power 100 every year, and Viktor is apparently surging up the ranks due to his active promotion of Ukrainian art abroad, and his recently introduced Future Generation Art Prize.

Yanukovych Vows to Fight Poverty - Whats Up?
Ok, so weve picked ourselves up off the floor, dusted ourselves down, and were trying to stuff our innards back inside after our sides split, such was our jocularity when we read about this.
Yes, good ol affable Yanukovych managed to keep a straight face when he called on all Ukrainians to make a joint effort to defeat poverty in the country. Now, in a country where it is estimated that one in four live below the poverty line, it is very important that steps be taken to improve the situation, but Yanukovych and his government have shown no signs of doing anything about it, so for him to call on the people made us laugh heartily.

Government Restricts Ukrtelecom Privatisation Tender - Whats Up?
Talking about stealing money from the taxpayers of Ukraine, the government has launched the long-awaited privatisation tender for Ukrtelecom, and it will come as no big surprise to anyone that it has imposed controversial restrictions that will exclude leading global telecoms companies from bidding.
Of course, the government of Ukraine is never going to sell off an asset in a clean and transparent way and without lots of people getting rich in the process, we all know this, and so the sale of Ukrtelecom should be no different.

Report Claims Tymoshenkos Government Stole Millions - Whats Up?
If Viktor Yanukovych was a pot and Yulia Tymoshenko was a kettle, he could be accused of calling her black with all the implied hypocrisy, because he and his government have just published an international audit which claims that the former government of Yulia Tymoshenko misappropriated hundreds of millions of dollars.

A Change of Heart - Ukraine Today
Ukraine and its people keep strong ties to their pagan past, and this is most evident in the many interesting and often humourous superstitions observed by most of the population. This superstitious influence makes for wonderful stories you will often hear if you keep your ears and mind open during get togethers, especially if alcohol is involved. Recently, while drinking beer in a pub I was told the most wonderful story, the end of which is not known. Read on, and enjoy

Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
