Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

From THE EDITOR (34) - Editorial
Sometimes in life there are days that are so much fun, and filled with so much poignancy that you simply know you will remember them forever. Such a day occurred on Saturday on the banks of the Dnipro at the Lions Games. Brilliantly organised by current President of the Kyiv Lions, Dave Young, I was expecting a fun day out, and this was that. But a whole lot more. It all started with a raft-building event with numerous teams participating, and design points have to go to Martin Nunn and the Whites team: while the rest of us lashed the four inner tubes together and strapped the planks on top, Martin and his team placed all four tyres in a row and using some of their planks as a counterweight/float created something that looked like it was made by Polynesians.

Visa-free Travel to Europe? - Whats Up?
Fancy a romantic weekend in Paris, or a couple of days sightseeing in Rome? For us foreigners it is so easy, we dont need to think about it, but for our Ukrainian friends it is a lengthy and troublesome process to get the visas required to make trips that are so simple for us. Visa-free travel to Europe is the dream of every citizen in Ukraine, one we at Whats On wholeheartedly support, and it seems to be a priority for the government too.

Are You Getting Gassed by an Incinerator? - Whats Up?
By law, a garbage incinerator cannot be located within 500 metres of residential buildings, and the reason for this is a good one burning garbage can release toxic fumes.
In fact, all incinerators should reside outside the city, but recently residents on Umanska Street in the Solomyanky district of the city found out that they are living within 200 metres of an incinerator, and they are up in arms about it.
The offending garbage disposal unit is located in a railway shed that looks innocent enough from the outside, but inside it is burning over three tonnes of litter every year.

Ukrainian Movie Nominated for European Film Award - Whats Up?
The Ukrainian film My Happiness by Serhiy Loznytsya has been nominated for Best Movie at the upcoming European Film Awards. The film has been put on a shortlist along with 46 other movies from 32 nations, and has a great chance of winning the prize which will come as the result of almost 2,000 EFA members votes.
My Happiness already won a prize at the Russian Film Festival earlier this year, despite the fact it caused a lot of controversy there due to its representation of life in a distant province.

Verkhovna Rada Descends into Brawl Once Again - Whats Up?
Yes, dear friends, the people running this country are buffoons who still believe matters can be solved through violence rather than debate. The countrys parliament descended into a pit of physical aggression once again last week when members of the opposition, supposedly protesting against the austerity measures recently introduced, stormed the podium, trying to seize control of it.
Kicks and punches were exchanged as members of the governing coalition tried to defend their positions, and the whole thing ended up looking like a Saturday night out gone wrong.

Kyiv Citizens Denied the Chance to Vote in Local Elections - Whats Up?
Yanukovych and his Party of Regions have been passing some severely constitution bending laws in an outrageous attempt to consolidate power, and on 9 September, these attempts were moved into the local political arena as the Verkhovna Rada voted to liquidate the Kyiv local district radas.

Homeless World Cup - Ukraine Abroad
This is not an episode of Bumfights. Nor is it another ill-advised money-making scheme for its founders. It is what it says it is football for the homeless.
Homelessness is not something new. Nor is it likely to be eradicated any time soon. It is something that affects 100 billion people worldwide in every city, state, and country, and that certainly includes Ukraine. Almost ten years ago, Mel Young, cofounder of The Big Issue street paper in Scotland, decided to do something about it, and looking for one universal language to speak out against this ever-increasing world dilemma, football answered.

Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
