Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

From THE EDITOR (27) - Editorial
On Saturday morning the sky was blue and the sun was shining, and after such a terrible week of heavy rain and storms many of us breathed a sigh of relief. But then in mid afternoon black clouds heavy with precipitation rolled in from the south and frightening booms of thunder reverberated throughout the city. The smiles many of us were wearing turned to concerned frowns. Why? Saturday was the day of this years Kyiv Lions Club Kozak Night, the last two of which had been marred by bad weather. However, we should not have been concerned, because despite the fact that it rained on and off throughout the whole event (sometimes very heavily) it turned out that once again the spirit of the Lions cannot be doused no matter what the heavens throw at us.

Yanukovych Power Grab Fails - Whats Up?
Yanukovych and his allies failed in an attempt to strengthen his powers on Saturday 10 July when parliament voted against proposed changes to the constitution. The president and his Party of Regions held a debate in the Verkhovna Rada on a proposal that would allow for a referendum to decide whether curbs on presidential power imposed after the Orange Revolution should be lifted.
At the moment, the president can only appoint the foreign and defence ministers, and even then, his proposed candidates need to be approved by the Verkhovna Rada. But now Yanukovych seeks to reverse the changes, allowing him to appoint ministers across the board, giving ultimate power.

Free Taxis for the Poor - Whats Up?
Heres another wonderful idea from the Kyiv City Administration, probably thought up by our wired-to-the-moon mayor free taxis for the socially disadvantaged. Now, dont get us wrong, were all for helping people out, but the question arises, whos going to pay for it.
According to the mayors office, the elderly, senior citizens, single mothers and the disabled simply cant afford to pay for taxis, and the city is now going to provide them for free. And while that sounds very commendable, there are a lot of elderly people, veterans, single mothers and disabled people in Kyiv, and we dont think there are enough cars to cater for all their travel needs.

European Council President in Kyiv - Whats Up?
On Monday, President Yanukovych met with the President of the European Council, Herman van Rompuy to discuss cooperation between the EU and Ukraine. Scoring points, Yanokovych pointed out when welcoming van Rompuy that his first visit to any country within the CIS was to Ukraine. This proves how important Ukraine is to the EU, and further proves that our countrys strategic course towards European integration is ongoing, Yanukovych said in a statement released by his press office.

A Smoking Ban in All the Wrong Places - Whats Up?
This one proves we have some real idiots running the country. One may have noticed that smoking is very prevalent in Kyiv. In fact, it is allowed in almost all bars and restaurants, making giving up a whole lot harder. But now two bright sparks in the Verkhovan Rada have decided to combat this, not by banning smoking in public places, but in the privacy of your own home and car.

Sex Main Cause of AIDS Transmission in Ukraine - Whats Up?
Yes people, its time to start strapping on condoms. According to a new report, heterosexual sex has now overtaken intravenous drug use as the main cause of the transmission of HIV in Ukraine. The trend has alarmed researchers showing that in Ukraine the HIV epidemic has moved out of the niche areas of intravenous drug users and homosexual men, and the mainstream population is now at serious risk.

The Coastlines of Kyiv - Active Kyiv
According to the Kyiv Sanitary Service, theres only one free beach in Kyiv that meets all the necessary requirements, and thats the Kids Beach in Hydropark. And while there are literally tonnes of other sandy bits where you could throw down a towel and claim as your own for a few hours, free spots that have been deemed acceptable number only four. Nonetheless, theyre ready to be checked out and deemed acceptable by the sun-worshipping Kyiv public, so without further ado, we give you Kyiv Beaches: some of the best sand in town.
When we say that these spots have been deemed acceptable, we mean that the quality of water has been tested, theyve got bins for garbage (that could use a little paint), and there is probably a place for you to change.

Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
