Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidan’s three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the country’s stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard – and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

From THE EDITOR (26) - Editorial
On Friday night at D’Lux after weeks of stressful organisation (especially on the part of our marketing manager Tanya Siyanko who was in tears more than once over the event, but who did a great job) the What’s On Legs 11 party finally took place, and it is testament to the professionalism of Rizzy and his team that it all went off without a hitch. We had a great line up of performers kicking off with Tamerlan and Alena Omargalieva, followed by the too hot chicks of Kamon both of whom really got everyone going. Then we had a wonderful live performance from the excellent pop-rockers Gouache, and the superlative Gorchitza Live Project finished off the live acts with a great set of their very popular dance-funk.

Scottish Sheep Get Chornobyl All-clear - Whats Up?
Would you adam and eve it? It’s almost quarter of a century since reactor number four at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Station exploded spewing radioactive material across Europe and much of the world, and the sheep in Scotland have only now been declared safe!
For the past 25 years Scottish sheep have been declared too hot to eat, but now, for the first time since the accident, levels of radioactive contamination in sheep on all Scottish farms dropped below safety limits last month, enabling the Food Standards Agency to lift restrictions.

Clinton Pussyfoots in Kyiv - Whats Up?
US Secretary of State turned up in Kyiv on Friday on the first step of a whirlwind visit to Russia’s back yard aimed at bolstering influence in the region after President Obama’s “reset” policy was seen as a green light to Moscow to reassert its authority on many ex-Soviet states. The tour is viewed as an attempt to reaffirm US support for struggling democracies and economies in the region.
Clinton’s speech in Kyiv was a delicate mix of restating America’s support for the country, and cautiously expressing concern over the Kremlin-style roll-back of liberties.
Clinton stressed that the door to NATO for Ukraine remained open, but that she respected Yanukovych’s foreign policy.

Tymoshenko Says No to IMF Stability Grant - Whats Up?
On Monday the IMF went ahead with a “preliminary co-operation agreement”, granting Ukraine a further $14.9 billion to help stabilise the country’s battered economy. The grant will prove to be a big bonus to Yanukovych and has administration, but final approval of the aid package will hinge on his willingness to introduce some economic reforms that will prove to be very unpopular, including raising the price of natural gas to the consumer.
“The staff level agreement is good news, and we are positively surprised that it came this soon given the unwillingness on the part of the Ukrainian authorities to implement unpopular measures,” said a report from Goldman Sachs.

Smarter than Dr House, and Much Nicer - Ukraine Today
Dr Ilya Yemets of the Ukrainian Children’s Cardiac Centre (UCCC) is a man who spends nearly all his time saving the lives of newborn babies suffering from congenital heart disease. That in itself is worth talking about, but this smiling man with a big heart has a brain to match, which is proven by the fact he’s recently devised a process that makes the saving of the lives of babies much easier. And this process is now being adopted all over the world. Amazingly, his procedure is a simple one, but no one had ever thought of it before. And that’s genius.
It’s always a great feeling for us when a What’s On cover sells during the charity auction at a Kyiv Lions Club event, and when Philippe D’Have of L’Oreal bought one during Burns’ Night 2010, we were very interested to see how he would use it.

Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didn’t Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they don’t understand the meaning of these words.

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street – the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades – children’s favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. What’s On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
