Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

From THE EDITOR (25) - Editorial
I love life in Kyiv. I love my job and I love the people of the city. But there are some things that get me down about living here. I am from Scotland, where 22 degrees Celsius is a very hot day, so I find these hot and humid days a bit difficult to deal with at times. Having spent the last few summers having nothing to keep me cool at night but a fan blasting down on me, I finally decided to invest in air conditioning. Finding some decent units on sale in Foxmart, I bought two and tried to arrange to have them installed. I didnt have enough money with me to pay for installation, and no matter how much I pleaded that I would pay on the day, they refused to book installation for me, saying Id have to call their service department once the units were delivered.

The government has announced plans to sell state assets and cut the governments role in the economy. And that means that many an oligarch and friend of Yanukovych will be rubbing their hands with glee at the prospect of picking up some incredible bargains.
So, whats up for grabs? Most importantly, Ukrtelecom, the state phone company. Apparently, the government plans to sell 92.7% of the company in one chunk, according to Oleksandr Riabchenko, head of the State Property Fund.

Regal Shares Fall 30% Due to Ukraine Suspension Order - Whats Up?
Shares in Regal Petroleum fell by nearly 30 percent on Monday after the company admitted that Ukraine has ordered it to suspend operations because of environmental problems. Regal insists, however, that its gas production is operating normally as it has been allowed to continue operations while official negotiations continue.
It appears the company was forced to make the disclosure due to rumours circulating on the internet that its gas wells in Ukraine have not been producing since March. Regal vigorously denies this suggestion, stating it was only made aware of the suspension order on 21 May, and that it had no need to inform the stock market because operations at the wells were continuing as normal. A spokesman for the company added there were no health, safety or environmental problems at the wells, and the order relates to procedural issues.

Now heres some good news Ukraines Prosecutor Generals Office has announced the creation of a special unit that will investigate Kyiv police actions, starting with numerous alleged illegal detentions.

Germany and US Warn Yanukovuch Over Press Freedoms - Whats Up?
There are grave concerns within Ukraine that Yanukovych is dragging the country back to being run by an authoritarian regime that silences critics and censors the media. And while the west has stood silently by until now, a couple of countries are finally starting to make some noise.
On Thursday 24 June, US Ambassador to Ukraine John Tefft warned Ukraines authorities against a return to media censorship.

When the Sun Goes Down - Kyiv Culture
Kyivs nightlife is something everyone has an opinion on. If youre not one of the many partaking in the pleasures it offers, then you certainly cant deny its influence on just about everyone in this city. The way people dress, the way they behave, the way they spend their money and their time: its of huge importance. Why or how the clubs of Kyiv manage to hold their captors under their sturdy spell, however, isnt the question. The question is, is it any good?

Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
