Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

From THE EDITOR (21) - Editorial
Reserve signs on tables in bars in Kyiv is an interesting phenomenon, dont you think? It confused me when I first got here, with the result of said confusion being me leaving the place actually believing that all the tables were actually, well Reserved. A circumstance I found a little strange for a while, because where on earth would you ever find a town in which all the tables in every bar were reserved on, say, a Monday night? It took the great Desmond Reid, former manager of OBriens, to explain that the tables are not actually reserved, despite rather obvious indications to the contrary, but that the signs are placed on the tables every single night of the week. Why? So the place can decide upon whether clients look as if they will spend money or not.

Alyosha Robbed inOslo - Whats Up?
The Eurovision Song Contest once again fell foul of political and block voting, and our Alyosha with her amazing voice and quality song was the one who lost most by it. While the German girl with her quirky song and its simple lyrics and melody which is of a style that is very popular at the moment, deserved to win, there were some truly awful entries that ranked above our lass, even though they should have garnered nil pwoi!

British Alcoholic Women Head to Ukraine for Treatment - Whats Up?
Alcoholism amongst UK women is rising at an astronomic rate as they battle the pressures of juggling a career with motherhood, and according to a report this week in the British press, they are coming to Ukraine for treatment.
Apparently they are coming for disulfiram implant treatment (the treatment George Best tried), which is only reserved for the severest cases in the UK. But here it is freely available, and the career women who find themselves drinking in secret at home and at the office are flying to Ukraine for treatment.

Yuschenkos Biggest Mistake: Tymoshenko - Whats Up?
Ya nye vinovat (its not my fault), is something you hear quite often here, so why shouldnt ex-president Viktor Yushchenko do the same? Well this week he did when he pretty much came out and blamed all his problems on Tymoshenko.
At a session of the council of his Our Ukraine party on Monday 31 May he said that further cooperation with Yulia Tymoshenko block could lead to the collapse of Our Ukraine. Not that anyone would notice.
I am sure that cooperation with Tymoshenko can be destructive to any political force, he is quoted as saying by the Unian News Agency. I am sure that my worst mistake was Tymoshenko. And the most serious mistake was to give her power twice.

Gazprom-NaftoGaz Merger Could Go Ahead - Whats Up?
After we all thought Medvedev had gone home with his tail between his legs, believing Yanukovych had laughed off the suggestion of a merger between Russian oil and gas giant Gazprom and Ukraine's little ol Naftogaz, it turns out that the merger, or should we say take over, could go ahead.
According to a report in the Moscow Times, Gazprom Chief Alexei Miller and Ukraines Fuel and Energy Minister Yuri Boiko sat down together last week to thrash out the details. And it seems they may have struck some sort of accord. Apparently, they are going to forge ahead on a 50-50 joint venture initially, but it is clear that the Russians hope the merger will follow quickly.

What Direction is He Taking? - Whats Up?
President Yanukovych has many people confused, including himself we think. Surprising many, the big galoots first move as the main man was to head to Brussels, which inspired many to hope he might take a pro-European stance concerning Ukrainian foreign policy. The result of his visit was that for the very first time (obviously laying down the olive branch), the EU said Ukraine could have EU membership, albeit without giving any sort of timeline.

All Together Now SWEEP! - Active Kyiv
While many people may think otherwise, curling is an interesting sport. It takes a lot of skill to slide the stone down the ice with the right amount of weight, and to know when to sweep and not to sweep. Okay, so as spectator sports go its not exactly extreme motocross, but its always looked like a lot of fun to play. So when I hear that the new Dream Town mall down in Obolon has a curling rink, I get a few lads together and off we go to give it a try.

Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
