Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

From THE EDITOR (20) - Editorial
Curling is about the only sport in the world the Scottish are good at (that and Elephant Polo, at which weve apparently been world champions three times now), and therefore while many people consider it quite boring, I and many of my compatriots have a reason to watch it whenever it comes on the TV during the Winter Olympics or World Championships. And in actual fact, once you take the time to watch and understand it, it really becomes quite interesting, in a chess-like sort of way. Of course, its not high adrenalin extreme sports, but it is certainly a game of skill and tactics. While I occasionally enjoy watching it, and my father was an avid but not very good player, Ive never actually tried the sport myself. To be honest, all that sliding about while sweeping always looked a little dangerous to me, but when I found out Kyivs first ever curling rink had opened in Dream Town, I thought Id have to give it a go.

Star Alley for Kyiv - Whats Up?
Our mayor Leonid Chernovetskiy is often referred to as Cosmos by local people largely due to the fact that many of his ideas are out of this world. And its an apt title as hes demonstrated many times in the past like when he invited the media to join him at his massive mansion in Koncha Zaspa to show that he lived like any normal Ukrainian; or when he went topless in front of the camera and started doing chin-ups to prove what a man he is; or, in a similar vein, the time when he invited the cameras to join him at his morning swim and posed like Mr Universe. The list of his crazy antics is endless, and the press loves it.

Tallest Man in the US is Ukrainian - Whats Up?
A couple of years back we announced that the worlds tallest man was Ukrainian Leonid Stadnyk. Sadly, however, Leonid was stripped of his title when he refused to be re-measured by the Guinness Book of Records under new guidelines. But this week Ukraine is announced as the holder of another world record for being tall, as the tallest man living in the US happens to be from here.

A Piece of History For Sale - Whats Up?
Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev were paying their respects at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier when, during an admittedly rather windy day, a gust of wind blew one of the wreaths off its stand and hit Yanukovych in the head. This is not new news. What is new, and something that also happens to be pretty darn funny, is that this very wreath has been stolen by members of the opposition party and is now on tender to the highest bidder.

Its what everyone in the country dreams of being able to travel to all the countries in the EU without having to go through the lengthy and humiliating applications process. Medvedev Leaves Empty Handed and the US Offers its Hand - Whats Up?
Everyone breathed a sigh of relief last week when Medvedev left without having made any further encroachments on Ukrainian sovereignty. Just about everyone was expecting Yanukovych to bow to the pressure and sign over more of the country during the visit, but despite being hit on the head by a large bunch of flowers he managed to stand his ground and refuse the offer to merge Naftogaz with the Russian gas and oil giant Gazprom.
Almost as soon as Medvedevs little feet stepped on the plane home, US Vice-President, seeing the crack, was on the phone to Yanukovych to discuss various bilateral issues.

Living a Bubbly Life - Kyiv Culture
With International Blondes Day quickly approaching this 31 May, we decided that we would have a bit of fun and go a bit bubbly because what could be more enjoyable or fun than living a blonde life..?
While we all know that those with blonde roots end even those of us with not-so-blonde roots are very often laughed at for being somewhat limited when it comes to mental capacity, hair colour can very often be misleading: It certainly is with these few blonde bombshells who are highly accomplished in both their personal and professional lives. So in celebration of those who make our lives just a little bit lighter, we give you some of the best highlights of being blonde, and also some of the funniest.

Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
