Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

From THE EDITOR (15) - Editorial
With our interview with world-renowned ballerina Anastasia Volochkova, and our review of dance classes, you might get the idea were focusing on dance this week, and youd be right. As for me, Im quite taken by the passion Ukrainians have for this art form. Theres no doubt about it, people here love to dance, and they love to watch dance too. Any visit to any one of the citys nightclubs, and you will see the floor full of young lads and lassies strutting their collective stuff, but that youd find in any city in any country. However, in a recent visit to b-hush on the upper floor of the InterContinental hotel, I was rather struck when, from nowhere, some dancers appeared and entertained us with a very unusual routine. Thats not something you would see in many other places, but it is something you see here very often.

Development Becomes Park - Whats Up?
Yes! Thats right! And no, its not a misprint where the first and third words should replace each other, as is usually the case in this fair city. The city administration has actually, we think for the first time ever, stopped a business development in the centre of the city and are now instead turning it into a beautiful park.
Sometime ago, the city sold the land to a local developer who announced plans to build a new luxury restaurant with sauna and underground parking at the site on Prorizna Street. The land was quickly fenced off and construction work commenced, but then the Ukrainian government intervened and accused the developers of purchasing the land illegally, and commencing works without the necessary permits.

Press Freedoms Decline Under Yanukovych - Whats Up?
And thats a bit worrying, especially for this particular editor-in-chief who is less than complimentary about the big gorilla and his political shenanigans. According to the Paris-based media watchdog, Reporters Without Borders, press freedom has already significantly declined in the very short space of time Yanukovych has been in power.
According to reports in the international press, there have been a number of incidents of intimidation and physical attacks on journalists, and abuse of authority towards the media in the past three months. Particularly, the group expressed concern about Yanukovychs decision this month to disband the national commission on freedom of speech, and urged the president to explain the move and spell out his media policy.

Elton Still Whinging - Whats Up?
Poor little billionaire Elton John appeared on the Oprah Winfrey show last week and told of his heartbreak when he found out he would not be allowed to adopt a Ukrainian child. Last September, tabloid press all over the world told the story of how he and his partner David Furnish, who were in Ukraine touring orphanages, had fallen in love with one toddler they met, little Lev, and had expressed a desire to adopt the boy.

New Gas Deal, but at What Cost? - Whats Up?
By the time Whats On rolls off the presses, President Viktor Yanukovych will have sat down in Kharkiv with his Russian counterpart, Dmitry Medvedev to thrash out a deal on gas prices, and while we go to press before the meeting on Wednesday 21 April, the results of it will demonstrate how far the Ukrainian government is prepared to get into bed with its big brother to the east, and the cost to Ukraine for doing so.

Shoot or Be Shot - Active Kyiv
With spring almost in full swing, we here at Whats On thought we would head out to paint the town literally.
Paintball is a pretty exciting pastime. Not only does it require skill and tactics, but you also need paint! Something not many other games can boast. Unfortunately, it hasnt reached the Olympic level just yet. But we think that between the coordination and the physicality needed to win, it wont be long before this ruthless competition makes it there. Intrigued? We thought you might be.

Volochkova Back in Town - Kyiv Culture
The former Prima Ballerina of Moscows Bolshoi Ballet is headed back to Kyiv with her own show, her own style and her own attitude. Much of the polished diva already know about, but there are snippets of the bewitching blonde that are only just becoming common knowledge.
Anastasia Volochkova is one the biggest stars to come out of Russia since the Soviets indomitable hockey team. To know that, however, youd have to pay attention to two pastimes that dont often go hand in hand; the world of sports as well as the world of ballet. Nevertheless, the amount of work that goes into either of these areas requires a great amount of focus, backbone and strength. Something Volochkova has demonstrated shes got, time and time again.

Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
