Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

From THE EDITOR (13) - Editorial
Corruption, corruption, corruption. We hear and talk about it a lot here in Ukraine the government is corrupt, the police are corrupt, the mayor is corrupt, teachers and university professors are corrupt, in fact just about everyone in public office is corrupt. And it is true. But how does it compare? I dont pay much attention to UK politics these days, probably because I dont live there, but as I was home for a few days last week visiting my folks I found myself catching up. What I saw surprised me a little. First thing that made me raise my eyebrows a little was to see that Peter Mandelson is back on the cabinet, this time as business secretary. This is the man who has been sacked twice from cabinet positions for corrupt activities. And yet there he is again, top of the table.

A New Embassy of God for Kyiv - Whats Up?
Nigerian preacher Sunday Adeladzha, and his Embassy of God, has announced plans to build a new church in Kyiv, estimated to cost around $50 million. The new Ukrainian Cultural Spiritual Centre, to be located on the 2.6 hectres of land on Dniprovska Naberezhna, wil not just be a church; it will also include a hotel, fitness centre and luxury restaurant. Sounds more like a business than a church to us. And 2.6 hectares of prime central Kyiv real estate?

The company concerned, Avangard, produces fresh eggs for the domestic market, and egg products for export. It has more than 16,000 birds across 19 farms, and also operates breeder farms and feeder mills.

Spring Clean for Tymoshenko - Whats Up?
Languishing on the back benches certainly doesnt seem to suit our ex-prime minister, Yulia Tymoshenko, and shes now announced a clear out of her United Opposition, which makes it sound not that united at all.
Today, were beginning a big clear out in our team, she said on her personal blog. We will clear out all the ballast, all the bog; we will get rid of all the rubbish that got into our team by mistake and for purely mercenary purposes. We will get rid of those people that are making our team weaker than it should be.
And all that makes us wonder if shes planning on getting rid of herself, because she certainly ticks all the boxes.

IMF Accelerated Crisis in Eastern Europe - Whats Up?
Heres a conspiracy theory if ever there was one: According to Mojmir Hampl, vice governor of the Czech Republics central bank, the IMF fuelled the economic crisis in Eastern Europe last year so that countries in the region would need help.
The IMF wrongfully interpreted some date as they were looking for a job, Hampl said in an interview with Austrian newspaper Der Standard.
It is incredible that the IMF accelerated the crisis. It was a clear attempt to necessitate the need for bailout across the whole region. Before the crisis the IMF had no clients, but once the crisis was underway, the fund found work and received money, Hampl said.

Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
