Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

From THE EDITOR (12) - Editorial
A few weeks ago I picked up a magazine in a bar (all the Whats Ons were gone already), and was reading it while I waited for my friends to arrive. The cover story in this issue of this particular magazine (which will remain nameless), was the top 20 wealthiest and most powerful women in Ukraine (what an original idea for a Womans Day feature). The cover showed a womans body from waste to neck dressed in a white jacket with a dollar sign necklace hanging just above her cleavage. Whats wrong with that? I hear you ask. Well there was a pair of mans hands reaching round her from behind and grabbing hold of her breasts. Now here at Whats On, we love to put beautiful women on our covers, but to have such an image on the cover of a magazine for a feature about a countrys most powerful women?

Chernovetsky Twins Kyiv with Amsterdam - Whats Up?
In another surprise move, earlier this week Mayor of Kyiv Leonid Chernovetsky announced that Kyiv will be twinned with Amsterdam, and that the capital of Ukraine will draw on many of the Dutch citys admirably liberal and thoroughly European attributes.
As part of this move he will be imposing a number of restrictions on traffic flow in Kyiv, including banning private vehicles from a large area around Kreshchatyk. We are going to buy a lot of bicycles, he said. And there will be more marshrutkas and plenty of taxis to get people around.

Foreigners Must Learn Ukrainian - Whats Up?
For many of us ex-pats living and working in Ukraine, things have become far more complicated regarding visas and residency permits over the past year. And in the very near future were going to have one more hurdle to cross when passing through border controls a test on the Ukrainian language.
From now on, every foreigner entering Ukraine will be given a short test on the local language, and entry will be refused if correct answers cannot be provided. And knowledge of Russian, no matter how advanced, will not be accepted as an alternative (unless accompanied by a bribe).

Bras Banned in Kyiv - Whats Up?
In line with our discussions on feminism in this weeks issue, a new feminist group in Ukraine thats already boasting a huge membership, Todays Women Always Together, have announced that all their members will no longer wear bras as they go about their daily business and are calling on all Kyiv women to join them.
In an attempt to draw attention to their movement, a large crowd of members gathered on Kreshchatyk to burn their bras in a move reminiscent of feminist protests in the west during the 60s.

Ex-pats to Pay Double for Everything - Whats Up?
As of 1 April 2010 new legislation came into effect that will force all foreigners to pay twice the price as locals for just about everything in Ukraine. From now on every restaurant, bar and nightclub will have two menus one for locals and one for the rest of us which, while being identical in content, will have different pricing. And not just restaurants, taxis will also cost double, as will trips on the metro and marshrutkas, and even petrol will be twice the price. For those who own their own properties, communal services and utility bills will be double that which local people pay, and any fines incurred will be the same.

Yanukovych Announces Plans for New European UNI0N - Whats Up?
It seems like the big man has had enough of Ukraine kowtowing to the EU and Russia, and has decided, now that Ukraine has political stability and a strengthening currency, it should be at the centre of European politics.
At a press conference on Monday that didnt take place, President Yanukovych announced plans for a new commercial UNI0N of nations with Ukraine at its centre.

Ukrainian Feminism under Investigation - Ukraine Today
Feminism is an interesting concept. In Ukraine it is even more interesting, because we have organisations like Femen, a group of women who supposedly stand up for the rights and liberties of all the females in this country, going out and doing the Full Monty right in the middle of Maidan. Slightly circumspect or fully within the realm of normality..? I ask the question.

Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
