Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

From THE EDITOR (11) - Editorial
Spring has sprung! Thank goodness for that! Throw off your winter coat and your fur hat. Scream from the rooftops, swing from the trees. Its glorious to feel plus 15 degrees! Yes folks (believe me, Im touching many different types of wood when I say this) it seems like the Uri Geller I called for last week has worked and spring has arrived at long last. As usual, the weather in this part of the world never does anything by halves, and within two days temperatures rose from several degrees below to plus 15 (quite astounding, but very welcome). Its been long, its been dark, and its been very cold, but (hopefully) winter is behind us, and its wondrous to see all the snow and ice thats accumulated over the past few months disappearing so quickly.

FBI Sends Cyber-Investigators to Ukraine - Whats Up?
The Ukrainian people are very talented at many things, and one thing theyre particularly talented at is computer programming. As you might expect, on occasion, those talents are put to use in ways that certain authorities are less than pleased with, and as a result the FBI plans to imbed agents within Ukrainian law enforcements agencies in the hope of catching some local cyber-crooks.

Google Could Pull Out of China - Whats Up?
A massive rift between the worlds largest search engine provider, Google, and the Chinese government is appearing, and the Colour Revolutions of Georgia and Ukraine are being cited as the main reasons by many experts.
Apparently, the Chinese government is very afraid of what happened in Georgia and Ukraine, especially the Orange Revolution, and fears free internet access of its residents could lead to similar protests in China.
However, Google is sick of the censoring of its search results imposed by the Chinese government, and announced on Monday it will close google.cn unless the censorship ceases.

Yanukovych to Meet Obama - Whats Up?
Its what just about every Ukrainian is dreading the bumbling oaf who is now the countrys president meeting with the intelligent and articulate president of the US. But its going to happen on 12 April as Yanukovych heads to America to meet with Obama for the very first time.
During the visit he will also meet with US Vice President Joe Biden, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and directors of the World Bank and the IMF, and its a worry how he will represent Ukraine in any of these meetings, but most worryingly of all is how he will come across in a meeting with Obama.

Controversy Erupts Around Eurovision 2010 - Whats Up?
While most countries in Western Europe treat the Eurovision Song Contest as a bit of a joke, with most not even televising the event these days, its still big news in Central and Eastern Europe. And its very big news here in Ukraine big enough news to cause all sorts of problems. In fact, this year Eurovision has warranted government intervention in the selection process (like theyve got nothing better to do).

Getting Fashionable with UFW - Kyiv Culture
The 24th biannual Ukraine Fashion Week took place not long after one of fashions top cities, Paris, rolled up their red carpet for yet another season. Aside from the catwalk, the shows and the all around fashionable parties that go right along with the whole process, UFW also gives us the opportunity to examine our history and development as a country from the perspective of fashion: Its tastes, its conduct and its pro-western orientation.
With regard to the recent death of former Givenchy designer and four-time British Designer of the Year winner, Alexander McQueen, western fashion reports have better resembled the obituaries than actual fashion articles as of late.

Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
