Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

From THE EDITOR (10) - Editorial
I am writing this on Monday 15 March. Thats the middle of March. That might be stating the obvious, but I want to emphasise the point, because when I was drinking my coffee and smoking my first cigarette of the day (yes, I am still trying to give up this filthy habit of killing myself while handing my money over to the most evil people on the planet) on my balcony this morning, there was a blizzard going on outside. Last week when the temperature rose to around 5 degrees and there were beautiful blue skies above us, you may have, like me, been thinking that spring was finally on the way. But on Friday the temperature was back below freezing and the snow was falling hard (if snow can do that), Saturday there was more snow, Sunday more of the same, and today its like the middle of January.

IMF Considers Resuming Loan Programme - Whats Up?
We hate to say it, but things are starting to happen under the new government, and it seems that the political stability were now hoping to see, despite how it has been achieved, will be a good thing for the country, and for business.
One such good thing is that the IMF has said it will consider restarting the loan programme it suspended in the run up to the presidential elections after talks with the newly appointed deputy prime minister, Serhiy Tyhypko. In a statement, Max Alier, IMF resident representative to Ukraine, said he and Tyhypko have discussed the governments 2010 policy priorities and discussed the possibility of resuming the programme.

Las Vegas Weddings in Kyiv - Whats Up?
A new wedding park should open soon in Kyiv, which is a good thing for all those who want to get married in a park. Certainly, during the summer months, you will see dozens of newly-wed couples having their photos taken in various parks around town almost every day, and more and more of those couples are seeking to stage the actual event in a park. Sadly, however, the cost of doing so has proved prohibitively expensive, and seeking the approvals necessary virtually impossible; until now that is.
The Kyiv City Administration has been looking into the prospect of building such a park for sometime, but has not had the money.

S&P Raises Ukraine Ratings - Whats Up?
Doesnt it just seem to be a string of good news following the fact that weve now got a bumbling buffoon and former (possibly) criminal as head of the country? First we had the EU sliming, then the IMF, and now Standard and Poors is giving the country a boost with improved ratings based on stability. Of course, not for a second does anyone care how this stability was achieved.
That aside, its got to be good news for the country, as it may encourage a little more much-needed inward investment. S&P has raised Ukraines foreign currency sovereign credit rating to B-/C from CCC+/C and its local currency sovereign credit rating to B/B from B-/C with a positive outlook.

Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
