Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

From THE EDITOR (44) - Editorial
After a few beers in our favourite local basement bar on Friday evening, my good friend Calvin and I decided to have another round in our ongoing bowling feud and headed down to Chameleon at the back of Ukraina Mall. Now, if you dont know the place, it has not only bowling but also a dance floor and DJ box a kind of little club next to the lanes. For as long as weve been going there, however, the club has not been very popular with maybe only a few folk taking to the dance floor after finishing up their games. But recently, its started doing Salsa, with lessons during the week, and a Salsa club night on Friday evenings. This has added to the popularity of the place, but still, I was not expecting to see the spectacle before me when we arrived this week. It had been some time since we were there on a Friday night, and the last time there was enough people to make a good night, but not much more.

River Palace Raided - Whats Up?
According to eyewitness reports, that favourite ex-pat hangout where no-one ever goes was the location for some very strange activity on Friday night when a gang of unidentified men turned up and called a sharp halt to the proceedings.
I was in the disco having something to eat when suddenly the house lights came on and the music stopped, one man who for some reason wishes to remain nameless told Whats On.

Ukraine Causes Wobble in European Markets - Whats Up?
Confirming the fact that these days every countrys problems become those of others, last Friday European markets and currencies took a bit of a nosedive amid fears that Ukraine might default on its sovereign and sovereign guaranteed debts.
It all started earlier in the week when Ukraines state railway said it was seeking to restructure a $550 million syndicated loan after failing to pay a portion. Since then, twitchy investors and analysts have been examining the implications of the rail debt on Ukrainian sovereign debt and other quasi-state olbligations.

Government Set to Make Billions on Kyoto - Whats Up?
Heres one theyre keeping quiet it seems that the government, or rather those running it, are set to make billions in trading carbon credits under the Kyoto treaty. Earlier this year, a one-tonne allowance sold for $10 when Ukraine signed a $300 million deal with Japan, and the government has almost 1 billion more tonnes to sell, according to Irina Stavchuk of the National Ecological Centre for Ukraine.
The hot air business is the main goal of the government, she said.

Tymoshenko Profits Politcally From H1N1 - Whats Up?
Weve been speculating since the beginning of the swine flu outbreak which of the countrys politicians would gain from the hysteria, and it seems surprise, surprise its Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko.
Her ratings have shot through the roof since the scaremongering began, and shes now almost on a par with frontrunner Yanukovych thanks to her frequent appearances on TV where she urges people to take care while at the same time criticising her political foes for inaction. Yeah, like telling everyone to take care is really going to help. But then, climbing a few rungs on the opinion polls ladder by bringing the country closer to the brink of economic collapse because everyones too frightened to come here is okay, isnt it Yulia?

Putin and Tymoshenko Strike a Deal - Whats Up?
Last Friday in Yalta, the prime ministers of Ukraine and Russia got together to see if they could strike a deal on gas, and it seems they managed to do so, but the question is: What was the real deal done here?
It was a little surreal to see Tymoshenko and Putin being so jovial at the press conference that followed the meeting when only a couple of weeks ago Putin went public with his doubts that Ukraine would be able to pay its outstanding bill and threatening that supplies could once more be cut off.

Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
