Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

From THE EDITOR (12) - Editorial
Yes, were back, and were better than ever. The last two weeks have been pandemonium, but we got through it, and were now very much delighted to present the very first edition of the all new Whats On. And as we humourously depict on the cover (thanks a million Dave, youre a star!), its a little bit different, and, we hope, a whole lot better. Weve spent the last couple of weeks redesigning the look and content of the magazine so we can provide you with more information, and in a better way. Generally speaking, we have updated the design of the magazine, giving it a thoroughly fresh and modern feel, and at the same time weve made the information you need every week more accessible.

An Excellent Addition to the Kyiv Tourist Trail! - Whats Up?
Not too long from now, one of the finest landmarks in Kyiv, Mariinskiy Palace, will be open to the public. The building was in great disrepair and was actually starting to fall apart and so reconstruction has already begun with the hope that the site will reach completion at some point in 2011. Once finished, Mariinskiy Palace will be open and welcoming to visitors for the very first time. For many years, the Palace along with other great landmarks in the city had only been used for official business by the highest authorities in the state.

Demand for Dollars Down! - Whats Up?
Compared to February, the demand on the dollar for the month of March has decreased significantly. The National Bank of Ukraine stated that the dollar has already fallen 2.6 per cent and that it will continue this downward slide. Experts say that this tendency is very good for the Ukrainian Hryvna because according to statistics, the NBU has already exchanged over 1 billion dollars. NBU sources also say that the dollar rate has remained at an average point of 7.70 hrv for March.

Yushchenko Bows to Protestor Pressure - Whats Up?
We were all wondering where they were, but it simply seems to have been a weather issue, because as soon as the sun appeared they were there, waving their Party of Regions banners. Yes, the paid protestors from the provinces took to the streets here in Kyiv on Friday and Saturday, demanding early elections due to the countrys mismanagement. Yanukovych has been quiet for a long time, and many have been joking recently that hes just allowing his opponents to mess it all up by themselves, and then he can step in.

Klychko Vs. David Haye - Whats Up?
WBC Heavyweight Champion Vitaliy Klychko confirmed he would defend his title in a fight with Haye to take place on June 20 2009, at Stamford Bridge in London. However, he later pulled out of the fight to prepare for his mandatory defense of the WBC title against Juan Carlos Gomez. Instead, his younger brother, IBF and WBO heavyweight world champion Volodymyr Klychko has agreed to fight Haye in Germany. So the fight is still on.

Say Goodbye to Visa-Free Ukraine - Whats Up?
Does everyone remember this headline and photo? We certainly do, as we were inundated with frantic phone calls and emails asking if our April Fools story last year was true. Then it was only our little joke, but now it might turn out to be sadly prophetic as this week the representative of the president in parliament stated he had plans to do away with the visa-free regime for EU countries.

Hollywood Star Rolls Into Kyiv - Kyiv Culture
Emmy winning Armand Assante first came to prominence in the 1974 hit movie, The Lords of Flatbush, and since then hes made over 60 films, with recent hits including American Gangster in which he starred alongside Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe, and the independent film When Neitzsche Wept in which mens attitudes to women are explored. He first came to Kyiv last year as a judge for the Molodist Film Festival, and now hes returned to complete a documentary film on the plight of the Ukrainian Jews during World War II. Whats On tracked him down to talk  about this project, his life, his loves and his thoughts on Kyiv.
The first thing that strikes you about Armand Assante when you meet him is his calm eloquence and dignified nature. He may well be known for his rugged good looks, but hes a modest man, very personable, and has an honest and hearty laugh.

Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
