Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

2008 In Review

From the Editor (48) - Editorial
And thus we come to the end of another year here in Eastern Europe, with the New Year celebrations bearing down on us in all their sweet, gaudy, tinselly glory. This is, of course, that season characterised by heavy rotations of that bittersweet Soviet classic movie The Irony of Fate on television; tidal waves of sweet champagne; spectacularly hallucinogenic yolki (New Year trees); smutty versions of Snehurochka the New Year gift-bringing fairy in nightclub floor shows;

Zhenya Tymoshenkos Luxury Ride - Whats Up?
Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenkos daughter Yulia is by all appearances a charming and unpretentious sort, but even shes not immune to the rage for incredibly expensive cars  that characterises the local elite. Witness her choice of a ride: a Mercedes CLS 350, which costs about $100,000. The car is reportedly registered to a relative of the Tymoshenkos, but Zhenya has the right to drive it. Attentive observers of the lifestyles of the children of Ukraines rich will remember that driving super-elite cars that are registered to or purchased by someone else is something of a habit of the class.

Ukraines King of Colour Spreads his Wings at Ya Gallery - This month
Wings 2, exhibition by Tyberiy Sylvashy, Ya Gallery (55/57 Volosska),  14-19 January
They sometimes call the great Ukrainian artist Tyberiy Sylvashy the King of Colour, since he uses the stuff in mind-blowing combinations. That can be seen in his latest project, Wings, which can be divided according to its two subjects: space and time. Space refers to the paintings themselves: how the colours interact, how they fill the canvas. Time refers to the actual exhibition, throughout the course of which Sylvashy will cut up his canvasses, turning the works into many smaller works. Curator Pasha Gudimov has promised a lot of surprises this gallery season, and he seems to be off to a good start.

Strausses, and Strausses, Play at National Opera House - This month
Strauss concert, National Opera House (50 Volodymyrska), 26 December at 19.00
Johann Strauss (the Younger) has been called the waltz king, taking what was a peasant dance and reworking it for the rarefied court of the Habsburgs. Even among a family known for its composers, Strauss distinguished himself, becoming the best known of his bloodline. You can judge for yourself at this concert at the National Opera House, where music from all the Johann Strausses (theres three we know of, grandfather, father and grandson) will be performed.

Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
