Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

Kyivs Pastor Sunday Banned from Russia - Whats Up?
Sunday Adelaja, the likable leader of the Ukrainian capitals Embassy of God Church, was left turning the other cheek at Moscows Sheremetievo airport recently, when the charismatic Nigerian churchman was refused entry to the Russian Federation. The holy man had flown to Russia to take part in a discussion about the sects famous Russian talk show, ironically entitled Let them Speak, only to find that a one year open visa does not necessarily give a foreigner the right to set foot on Mother Russia.

Condolezza Needs a Real Man says Zhirinovsky - Whats Up?
Rotund loudmouth and Russian nationalist Vladimir Zhirinovsky has cited Condolezza Rices lack of that special someone as the main reason for her continuing attacks on Russia and support of Ukraine. Effortlessly brushing aside such issues as freedom of speech, government accountability, and corruption, the witless windbag said that the actions of the US Secretary of State can be explained by her single status.

Russia Set to Ban Sexy Teenage Mags - Whats Up?
Puritanical prudes in Russia are gunning for three glossy teen magazines. Lead by the magnificently Ruritanian monikored Russian Deputy Prosecutor General Sergie Fridinskiy, a number of political parties, religious groups and other self-appointed guardians of public morals are campaigning for the closure of Molotok, Cool, and Cool Girl, on the grounds that they promote an unhealthy interest in drugs and sex.

Ukraine Denies Sale of Missiles to Iran - Whats Up?
After a brief hiatus the ultra murky Ukrainian arms industry is back in full swing, with Russia accusing its strategic ally of selling missiles to rogue state Iran and the Red Terror that is China behind the back of the international community. Helpful Russian Defense Minister Sergey Ivanov recently said that a Ukrainian firm had delivered six X-55 cruise missiles to China and another six to Iran in 2000 and 2001. This is a most flagrant violation of the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR) of which Ukraine is a member, he added, in case anyone had missed the point.

Concert Spirit of the Sixties in Style - This Week
Concert  Spirit of the Sixties in Style
Umka and the Armoured Car in concert, Jazz and Pop School (7a Chelyabinska), 7 July at 20.00

Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and the Yardbirds, are just some of the classic bands with whom Umka and the Armoured Car share a similar sound, though the shrill lead vocals of Anya Gerasimova are certainly from the more alternative stable of Rock.   With some thirty records to their name, this is one band which certainly knows whats expected of them when it comes to performing in front of a live crowd, with their grinding guitar repertoire being versatile enough to please both the young and hopeful, and retro rockers who really should know better! For more information, call 517-6188 or 517-8279.

Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
