Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

Five Reasons to Love Malomayak By Stella Zakharova

Olympic champion and President of the charity fund Sport and Children Stella Zakharova doesnt have much time to rest. To recover from her hectic Kyiv life, she likes to get as far from the crowd as possible whenever she can. The organiser of the Stella Zakharova Cup event finds her inspiration in riding horses and other forms of exercise.

1. Malomayak is for Family Vacations
This picturesque part of our country is located near Yalta, which I actually dont like, because its very uptight. Im a busy person who works in Kyiv on various projects, but when I have some time I like to be with my family. A couple of good friends, my husband, my small daughter and my son are ideal company for me. Theres a good restaurant on the beach where you can enjoy delicious fresh seafood. Im not fond of the bar−crawling thats so popular in Ukraine: I prefer to go to a restaurant and drink a glass of good wine. You only get one life, so you should take full advantage of it. You can swim in the sea all day in Malomayak and then walk in the tree−lined park during the evening.

 2. Its Great for the Young and the Old
Malomayaks equally perfect for young people and old people. I can read a book or sunbathe while my daughter jumps off the pier into the water. Shes very energetic, and when she gets too persistent we can go to the nearest dolphinarium or to the zoo. But in general I like that Malomayak isnt an ag− gressively promoted resort its peaceful. I dont pay much attention to the look of things and that means that comfort is the most important thing for me. Malomayak is perfect for when youre in the sort of mood when discos and pretension irritate you. Heat is horrible to me, but the towns green spaces are a delight.

 3. You Wont Be Bored
As a gymnast Im used to a tough schedule and a strict time−table, and even when Im on vacation I have a lot of things to do. I get up at 6 every morning. Just imagine how beautiful the Black Sea is in the morning! I do my morning exercises on the beach, then jump into the water. Theres no better or more inspiring thing in the world. I was born in Odessa, so from early childhood Ive had a connection with the water, which has an empowering effect on me. In Malomayak I have a lot of time to be with my kids. Ive actually never pushed them to do gymnastics. Theyre finding their own way in life, and I just guide them.

 4. East or West, Home is Best
Ive travelled a lot, but theres no place like home. I say that not because Im so patriotic about Ukraine but because sooner or later you get lonely abroad. I lived in Sweden with my family, so I know what Im talking about. In the Crimea you meet people with the same lifestyle as you, with the same men− tality. Its more enjoyable to chat with natives than with foreigners, because they understand you better. We do have an underdeveloped infrastructure − and Malomayak is no exception but even when you go to a five−star hotel in Egypt, you see lots Russians who just like the free food. The economy is a problem at the moment, but Im sure that in a couple of years the situation will improve.

 5. A Sound Mind in a Sound Body
I dont really understand alternative therapies. When youre exhausted or completely tired the best treatment is to go to a place like Malomayak and exercise and follow a healthy diet. It helps not only your general physical well−being but also your inner state. Im human, so I cant avoid getting de− pressed sometimes. When negativity overwhelms you, my advice is to turn to horseback riding. All the negative energy youve accumulated disappears as soon as you come into contact with these intelligent animals. I always start thinking more positively and come up with solutions to problems. As every− one knows, an obstacle overcome is simply a door to the next (and usually better) period of your life!

    Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

    Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
