Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

Cover Story

33 Seasons of Fashion

Its that time of year again, where colours and cuts and all things cloth-related figure prominently among Kyivs coming attractions. We go down to the designers lair for a quick synopsis of whats hot for Spring/Summer 2014 and offer you a quick run-down of what might be seen on the runway this season.

Volodymyr Nechyporuk
General Producer Ukrainian Fashion Week
The 33rd Ukrainian Fashion Week sets a record this season in terms of events and foreign designers. Guests will have the opportunity to attend events in 20 different formats, such as art installation, video projects, lectures and unique collection presentations. Five designers will present as part of the New Names programme, while Fresh Fashion could well be termed Fresh Fashion International, considering weve got designers coming from the UK, Kazakhstan, Georgia as well as Ukraine. There will also be a lecture by Frances Garam Gvasalia one of the most colourful and charismatic characters in European fashion. And to round out the week, UFWs last show is thanks to Indian designer JJ Valaya, who has prepared a national tribute.

Olena Dats
Ukrainian designer
My collection this season is all about symbols; small elements growing into larger pieces, which I hope will become a talisman in black in and beige. Fragments of embroidery are key in all of my dresses. And this year, for the first time, I had my prints made in Ukraine!

Anna Bublik
Ukrainian designer
My spring/summer collection, which we have lovingly called Kaleidoscope, is very bright. Look for vivid, contrasting colours and shades with lots of geometric shapes and silhouettes.

Elena Burenina
Ukrainian designer
This collection is based on light and dark hues but also includes bright accents, featuring clean lines and graphics. Using different textures, prints, fabrics and even nanotechnology, it represents the cyclical relationship and interconnectedness of nature.

Volodymyr Podolyan
Ukrainian designer
My collection reflects the endless conflict between the conservative and the liberal, and includes the confrontations of opinions and perspectives. You will find graphic, clear-cut silhouettes in summer coats, cocktail dresses, blouses, trousers and jackets. Deep black combines in asymmetric saturation with shades of yellow, fuchsia, and colourful blues.

Olena Burba
Ukrainian designer
Our new collection is called Agro-chic, and reflects the beauty of nature inherent in all natural shades and colours. I was inspired by a recent trip to Italy, where I became acquainted with the life and mentality of the locals, how these people live, the traditions they observe and their attitude towards women and the family.

    Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

    Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
