Based on archaeological findings, scientists presume Kyiv was founded in somewhere around 482. However, the city’s founding remained unheralded until 1982 when the Soviet regime decided to mark the 1,500th anniversary and started preparing a huge celebration. Since that time, the festivities have become even bigger with Kyivites joined by people from all over Ukraine.
Something for Cyclists

Cyclers in the capital will definitely be involved in the international bicycle contest Race Horizon Park 2013, which this year runs for three days starting on 24 May at 10.00. The race starts on Mykoly Hrinchenka Street and runs down to Blakytnoho Street. The finals of Ukrainian Bicycle Championship, a 25-lap criterium race, will be held on 25 May. At 12.00 more than 300 cyclers will gather on Maidan Nezalezhnosti to start the race.
The Last Bell Concert

In Ukraine, May is the last month before schools break for summer, or some graduate and join the real-world. This rite of passage is known in Ukraine as the Last Bell, rung especially for graduates. At 18.00, Palace Sport invites graduates and all fans of music to a show featuring Boombox, Nervy, Valentyn Strykalo as well as DJs Dasha Shi and Oleksiy Durnev. Tickets are 150 – 300hrv.
Kyiv Pride 2013

After last year’s aborted attempt to fly rainbow flags in Kyiv, the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender League of Ukraine will try again to stage a peaceful march. This year, Kyiv Pride – the official name of the parade – is supported by various international diplomatic representatives in a bid to bring a little more order to proceedings. The parade will kick off near TSUM and go up Prorizna Street.

Day of Kyiv also promises a little time-travel, transporting people back in time to revisit some of the city’s history. Knights will duel, and perform stunts on horses, and, of course, great music awaits visitors to this two-day festival dedicated to the history of Kyiv. The highlight of the event will be a Medieval Fencing Tournament.

Nearly 500 street artists from all over Europe will wow crowds with fire in Mariinsky Park starting at 19.00. Jugglers, acrobats, dancers and firework masters will all feature. French group Mandalights has prepared a special fire show called Glass Elves especially for the evening.
The next day, Spartak Stadium will open its doors from 15.00 until 21.00 to showcase circus performances, hold a drum school and perform fire tricks in various master classes. The event will conclude with a world record attempt for the largest number of fire performers doing tricks at the same time. While entrance for the performance in Mariinsky Park is free, the show at Spartak will cost 60hrv at pre-sale and 70hrv on the day.
Flower Cars Exhibition

On 25 May, Day of Kyiv revellers will be able to see cars made of flowers exhibited at Spivoche Pole park near the statue to the Motherland. In preparation, organisers have grown more than 2,000 square-metres of grass alone, not to mention the floral component. The floral cars and trucks will be the focus, as will various master classes run for visitors to understand the way the sculptures are made.
Probig Pid Kashtanamy (Running Race Under Chestnuts)

Now in its 21st year, the annual race will start as usual on Maidan Nezalezhnosti at 10.00. But if you want to register, come at 08.30. From there, runners go to Besarabska Square then to Olimpiyska Metro via Velyka Vasylkivska and back. The total distance covered is 5km. Runners are divided into three groups: professional, amateurs and children under 7. As the race is a charitable event, participation costs 50hrv.
Laser Show above the Dnipro

The celebration of Kyiv Day will culminate in Obolonska Naberezhna with a laser show illuminating the night sky and the city’s lifeblood – the Dnipro. The spectacle starts at 20.00 but both before and after the show the crowd will be entertained with live music. Entrance is free!
