Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

Breakfast, your mother might have told you, is the most important meal of the day. Its got to be healthy and taste good and it cant take much time. Khinkali, the Georgian restaurant in Obolon, does break− fast right, offering fresh green salads, toast with fish and caviar, por− ridges, muesli with fruits and ham and mushroom omelets. Also try the pancakes with cheese, raisins and cream or with melon. Break− fast cant exist without a cup of tea or coffee and those beverages are excellent here too.

Summers end saw Vitalik Sitak return to Kyivs Velour restaurant after completing nine months of study at the London branch of Le Cordon Bleu, the Paris−based culinary institute. Vitalik is the only Ukrainian to have graduated from the prestigious school, and holds two diplomas one in confectionary preparation, and one in cooking main courses. Vitalik says his London sojourn was hard but interesting he had lessons with great European chefs from 9.00 till 20.00, and tried not to miss anything. He also amassed experience working for a London confectioner, learning how to make colored−glass figures out of spun sugar, and got a deep education in French sauces and soups. Needless to say, he met many new friends his group included 30 students from 17 nationalities. Today he still gets calls from his Turkish and Australian fellow students who are planning to open restaurants in their home countries. Two years before setting out for London, Vitalik started working at Velour as a waiter, sommelier and then cook. Thanks to Velour owner Nikolay Tishchenko, and his creative poli− cies, Vitaliy had the chance to go abroad. He believes Ukraine has a bright restaurant future, but that more education and more international class specialists are needed.

On 22 August the renowned restaurant on Gorodetskogo threw a fresh watermelon party, where guests could enjoy these tasty and healthy melons in various ways: cut into masks and baskets, fashioned into balls, and so on. Watermelon punches were also served. The restaurant was decorated with stylishly designed watermelons, which gave attendees ideas about how to eat this lovely summer product. You can try to make Fellini−style watermelons at home, using a sharp knife and your imagination.

On 30 August this creative Russian restaurant and salad bar celebrated its first birthday. Berizka (oak tree), located near Palats Sporta in the centre of Kyiv is the place where modern style and ancient culinary traditions come together, and is well known for its healthy food and homely atmosphere. During the night there were plenty of fun competitions and the evening was rounded off with an 80s disco. Everyone had a great time helping this newest member of the Kozyrna Karta family of restaurants celebrate its first birthday.

Naberezhnoe Shosse, berth #2, M. Dnipro
Japan is the home of Karaoke so when this fashionable Japanese restaurant decided to open a karaoke bar this summer, they really went for it. This isnt some patched together system with a DVD player, TV, whistling microphone and dodgy speaker system, this is a custom built karaoke hall with a proper stage, state−of−the−art sound system and all the best modern equipment, and they even offer the assistance of a backing singer if you need it. It is a big room, and therefore if youre not one hundred percent confident in your voice then it can be a bit intimidating, but with the best audio technology on offer, you cant help but sound good. This place is very popular especially on Friday and Saturday nights, so be prepared to wait for you turn, but rest assured, when it comes you will shine!
Karaoke is available daily from 23.00 till 06.00 together with kitchen and bar
One song costs 30 hrv

This retro venue decked out like a 50s American bar/diner with records, memorabilia and sections of motorcycles adorning the walls has its own special twist on karaoke as it is not DVDs backing up your vocal stylings, but a real live band! Every Sunday everyone wanting to feel like a real rock n roll star should get down to this basement bar and take part in the competition to find the very best live performer, but dont raise your hopes too high of walking away with the grand prize as this place draws some quality talent such as the girls from SMS, Alibi and others. This is the only place where you sing with a live band, making it that extra but special, but dont let if put you off either as these guys are highly skilled and will play to your beat, even changing key if necessary for those who find it hard to keep to the right one!

Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Pulling Strings
