Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

Take me out!

ANI Ani restaurant celebrated its first birthday party on 2 October. A big crowd of guests sampled a variety of delicious Armenian dishes and watched an entertaining programme, complete with beautiful Armenian traditional costumes. Amidst all the exotica, guests had the feeling that theyd travelled far away from Ukraine.

PANORAMA CLUB A new restaurant, Panorama Club, opened in Kyiv on 28 September. Italian singer Carmello Caruso visited the fledgling venue and performed for those lucky enough to be present. While television personality Yuriy Gorbunov entertained, guests enjoyed the delicious food and the exquisite atmosphere at a new establishment that promises to draw Kyivs most important people.

Its a mistake you still find on Kyivs restaurant scene: making restaurants too big. Many eateries here have five times more tables than they need, so theyre 90 percent empty most of the time. And an empty restaurant is a restaurant in which you dont really want to be.

Theres one thing that most people would agree generally detracts from the overall eating out experience here in Kyiv poor service. Quality food is becoming more widely available here now, but quality service is still very hard to find. This week we went looking for both in one place you would definitely expect to find it the 5-star Hyatt Regency Hotel on Sofiyisky. But did we find either?

Healthy lifestyles have finally become fashionable in Kyiv theyre the latest trend for the glamourous set. Kyivites are sipping mineral water, choosing white wine over the usual vodka and cognac, and counting calories, even when they eat out. So its no surprise that restaurants serving wholesome Mediterranean cuisine are becoming more popular, or that seafood restaurants have become some of the citys most desirable food destinations.
A new restaurant that recently opened on Volodymyrska, near Sofiivska Square, might at first catch potential customers attention with its unusual name. Fish Market has an inviting look to it, and has generated a lot of buzz this summer. When I heard about the place, I imagined a lively seafood mar− ket where fresh fish flopped on beds of ice, men in rubber boots unloaded cases of oysters from boats and women in aprons bellowed out orders and cut up big fish with swift movements of their sharp knives.

On 8 September one of the most luxurious sushi-bars in the city organised a beautiful flower party named after beautiful chrysanthemum. The programme included Japanese dancing, outstanding contests, the sampling of new dishes and presents from the director Nikolay Tischenko and his team. The whole restaurant was full of these bright flowers and everyone was giving them to each other just because it was the day of chrysanthemum.

On 7 September journalists became VIPs for a while and experiencing all the trappings such as being caught on camera by the paparazzi. A special treat for them all, organised by the Pees Boy Club, took place at Partisan restaurant and had something of a military feel about it with plenty of competitions and music, and even a chance for them all to get their hands on some weapons. There was singing and dancing, and everyone had the chance to enjoy an open-air evening of relaxation far from the madding crowd!

Pizza! Its a cry heard all over the world when people get hungry, especially after a few beers. Finding a good pizza, however, is not all that easy, so this week we tried a new pizzeria thats opened in town to find out into which category their pizzas fall.

On 15 September one of the citys top centres for nightcrawlers will host a hot party led by one of the UKs leading DJs. The easy−on−the−eyes Eve Carey unites club culture and fashion, planning this year to launch her own clothing line, Pacha, during her tour. Eve describes her style as a mix of house, electro and chunky beats and can compete with any DJ around. Her career started in the late eighties in her hometown of Birmingham where she worked as a sound engineer and DJ instructor. Shes also one of the three female DJs who comprise Charlys Angelz, the all−female DJ project that sets clubs on fire in the UK and Ibiza. Catch her this Saturday at Arena! Mediterranean eatery Marshe is guided not only by world culinary standards, but also by its customers preferences. Thus youll find here not only a great variety of seafood, but also a great Ukrainian borscht. The classic Ukrainian dish is served with salo, pickles, garlic and vodka. Fragrant malty bread straight from the restaurants oven is served in place of the usual pampushki.

Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
