Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

Special Feature
Ukraine is a fun-filled wonderland of treasures, with surprises at every turn. Some things you find youll never see anywhere else, so you need to be quick and catch them when you can. With the holidays fast approaching, December 25th is right around the corner, so if youre planning on being home for the holidays, then youd better be packing presents!

Ukraine, without doubt, has more than its fair share of skilled craftsmen; making carpet weaving just another one of many. Having recently come across an artisan embodying such skill and dexterity in his craft, however, I couldnt help but stand transfixed as he wove magic with his bare hands.
While it may not be the sexiest of professions, the plaiting of carpets is one of the most ancient of Ukrainian handicrafts. Even with ethnic design making a comeback in home décor over recent years, what Stepan Ganzha is able to produce far transcends that of what is popular or trendy.

Having gained the respect of her colleagues, design connoisseurs and those who can afford her clothes, Victoria Gres was one of the first brands of fashion to appear in Ukraine, and as such is one of the most recognised trademarks around. With Ukrainian Fashion Week recently showcasing all thats new for 2011, Whats On got the opportunity to take a peek at just what happens back stage, and then do a little chin-wagging with the lady herself.
With the doors to Fashion Week all locked up for another year, I head over to the cosy showroom where Victoria Gres receives clients new and old, When I arrive, I feel as though Ive gone back to a century past where time carries little importance: there is a huge mirror in a luxurious retro-style frame, a vintage style dressing partition, and there are small tables with thin ornate legs standing courteously around the room.

If youd have seen a skeleton walking down the street even a decade ago, thered have been screams and squeals and all sorts of commotion. Today is different, however, and its rather hard to imagine this festive frolic without frocks of all types. Luckily, Whats On has got you covered, quite literally, when it comes to costumes, and whether you want to buy or rent, if you follow our advice, it may just be you who takes home the costume prize for Halloween this year!

As a bachelor, I am all thumbs when it comes to cooking. Kyiv, on the other hand has a number of intelligent cooks with tricks of the trade just waiting to be cracked. With this in mind, I snuck into the kitchens of InterContinental Kyivs Comme il Faut one morning, where I met up with master chef, Bohdan Mykhailov. Explaining that I was looking for a few extra pointers in the kitchen, he could see that while I might be a little crazy, I was also eager to learn and so politely consented to giving me my own private master class!

Life is full of temptations and enticements. And if you get the chance, you should take the opportunity to try every single one of them. At least when it comes to genuinely delicious pure Belgian chocolate.
While it may seem like this country should be higher up in the ranks, Ukraine currently sits at 13th when it comes to world chocolate consumption.

The Irish are known for lots of things: good old St. Patrick, the genius that is U2, and their knowhow with the potato. But perhaps what you didnt know is that they seem to have a pretty good handle on the film industry as well. And with the Irishfest Festival of Film Shorts headed our way at the end of this month, you may want to check it out.

Stepping up the search for talented artists to head up the Whats On Master Class, we came across a rather extraordinary band called Antenna. Now, we know what youre thinking yet another nameless group out of the myriad of Ukrainian bands out there... But this is where youd be wrong, and were going to tell you why.

The President of Ukraine, Mr. Viktor Yanukovych is celebrating his 60th birthday this 9 July, and we wouldnt be doing our duty if we here at Whats On didnt congratulate him properly.
He may be the leader of one of the most seemingly courted countries in the world, but even hes got a past, and taking a look at President Viktor Yanukovychs breathtaking biography, the story that unfolds is long and sordid.

If I were to tell you that these two things would become the focal point of your entire existence, you would perhaps ask me, why these two things? Whether Oleksandr Ktitorchuk has ever asked himself such a question or not, I dont know. The truth is, he simply is a ship-dwelling photographic master, and sneaking on board one day to take a peek at how the man works, my own photographer and I are both blown away at what we see and learn.
This man, Oleksandr Ktitorchuk, lives on a ship called St. Andre. This ship he has built with his own two hands, where upon it, some of the greatest photo shoots Ukraine has ever seen have taken place.

Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
