Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

Special Feature
Nationalism is a topic of continual debates in todays globalised world, and no less when it comes to Ukraine, a country with a troubled historical and ethno-cultural past.
The international team at Whats On is concerned by the social situation in Kyiv which, on one hand, is considered to be a hospitable and tolerant city, but on the other hand, people from ethnic minorities get set upon from time to time.

Shake it, stir it, stick a pretty little umbrella in it Whatever you do just make sure you got a glass that contains some kinda colourful concoction of liquids in your hand! If you follow along below, well even teach you how to make it taste good!
While the weather may not be cooperating at the moment, it is summer. And what happens in the summer? Beach, BBQs and of course cool and tasty beverages.

Whats On enjoys a good fight, and there are few more contentious topics to fight about than music, especially electronic music. Love it or hate it, the arrival of electronic music changed the musical world forever, and technology keeps it evolving and progressing. Can live music compete? Is it better? We let two top performers from different ends of the musical spectrum fight it out.

No one knows exactly when it all started, but at some point more and more naked girls started appearing covered with paint and intricate designs. Many may have been repulsed by what they saw as a vulgar medium for advertising, but there is no question that painted models attract lots of attention to various exhibitions, and painting them is art!
It all started back in the beginning of the 20th century with the growth in popularity of avant-garde as a genre of art. Post-modern ideas found their incarnation in various forms such as tattooing, scarring, piercing, implantation, body modification, as well as in the form of expression we examine today - body painting.

For Orthodox Christians, Easter is one of the most important and most anticipated holidays of the year. Lent is over and people joyfully greet Easter with mandatory traditional Ukrainian Easter items, like paskha (Easter special bread) and pysanky - specially painted Easter eggs. If paskha can be easily bought at your nearby supermarket (though a self-respecting Ukrainian housewife would only ever bake it herself), pysanky are something you can only make yourself. Whats On is at your service in teaching you how to make a real Ukrainian Easter pysanka.  Read carefully, as youll want to make a couple of them for you and your friends!

Ukrainian Fashion Week has just come out with the latest trends for the coming seasons, and there are some incredible must haves for ladies everywhere. Assuming youve got the means to indulge youre going to want to complete the picture; something Maybelline brand manager and stylist Yuriy Tsarev can help with. From catwalks to red carpets, hes got the tools to make anyone look like a star.

Stuck in a Saturday night rut with sushi on the brain? Take our sushi master class from the masters at Sushiya and eat to your hearts content!
Having become quite fashionable and arguably prestigious, sushi has become far more than just your average lunch these days. That said, it has also been powerless to escape the radar of dozens if not hundreds of restaurants in Kyiv, and has found its way onto menus everywhere.

We here at Whats On would like to wish you Happy Hug Day! Never heard of such a celebration? Well then were pleased to inform you that the International Day of the Hug will take place on 21 January! I bet we have you wondering why people in Ukraine have started to pay more attention to such a festive occasion. We too were curious, but psychologists say that hugs are a healthy way to express your feelings and make the person you are hugging feel good too.

Wanting to wish Whats On and all our readers best wishes for the New Year, a big bunch of celebrities wrote to us telling us all about their plans for 2011 and how they will bring in the New Year. How anyone celebrates is always a matter of personal choice, but we always like to see how the stars do it, especially when money and popularity add a little spice to the party. However, its interesting to see so many still think about family at this time of year, and how many of their dreams for 2011 are very down to earth.

Celebrating Christmas on 25 December is not usual here in Ukraine, so we asked some folk from the international community in town what Christmas means to them and where they will be spending it. Actually, the answers they gave were varied and interesting!

Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
