Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

Cover Story
Madonna smooching Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera at the August 2003 MTV Video Music Awards caused millions of jaws to drop worldwide. Whats been forgotten in the decade since (as well as the fact Aguilera was in the mix) is that the path for the girl-on-material-girl-on-dirty-girl action had been cleared months earlier by two Russian girls kissing in the rain in school uniforms. Whats On meets with t.A.T.u. to talk about that kiss, the 10 years since, and mounting a comeback.

The link between the Impressionism movement and Paris is as indelible as the links between the city and the artists that spearheaded the art form the Impressionists. To put forward the notion that Impressionism can be linked to Ukraine is bold. Though, thanks in large part to the British Ukrainian Chamber of Commerce (BUCC), Whats On looks at the impact Ukraine-born artists, particularly Mykhaylo Tkachenko made to the Impressionist movement in Paris and how the annals of art history recognised him and his Ukrainian contemporaries.

Comprising of four LA boys doped up on the best and worst that is world politics, sexism, drugs, religion and more, NOFX are about as cheeky as you get. Treating us to their head banging tunes and impertinent lyrics, the wait is over: White Trash, Two Heebs and a Bean are here this week and theyre getting Punk in Drublic.

The Crimean Peninsula is home to what has been dubbed the sexiest festival in the world, while a quick ferry ride and border hop will take you to a Russian festival that is whole lot more family-friendly. Whats On looks at two festivals that may be polar opposites but are both hot tickets.

This April, for the third time, Ukraine held a nationwide spring-clean involving almost 140,000 volunteers in more than 370 cities and towns in all over the country. The initiative Lets Make Ukraine Clean was held as part of the worldwide social project Lets Do It! placing Ukraine in the company of nearly 90 countries around the globe aiming to make our home the Earth cleaner. Whats On looks at the problem of waste management in Kyiv and wider Ukraine to see what attitudes the country has when it comes to rubbish.

Lana Del Rey is a phenomenon that exploded last year in a blaze of Super-8 think-piece angst, which, for all its referencing of the past, is very now. Shed already tapped the curious pre The Great Gatsby, multi-era mishmash aesthetic thats worked its way into pop culture when she, fittingly, recorded the movies theme song Young and Beautiful her best performing single to date. Now, one of the most talked about singers of today is Kyiv bound.

One of the best-selling punk rock bands of all time, who have officially sold more than 40 million albums worldwide, The Offspring is coming from sunny California to tell you Days go by, but we remain young! The lyric stems from the title track on the groups ninth long-play Days Go By released last year, and this week they bring the track and their extensive back catalogue to Kyiv.

If you happened to be at Whats On Spring Flowers party last year, you may remember the petite, delicate, dark-haired young woman whose powerful vocals penetrate both the heart and soul. You might have not understood the lyrics of her songs Kasha mainly sings in Ukrainian but the emotion was definitely palatable. We profile the face of Krykhitka, Kasha Saltsova, who has made her mark as one of Ukraines best female rockers.

Arash is an artist who refuses to bow to convention, or follow trends in the music industry. Despite enjoying success across Europe, the Iranian-Swedish singer, entertainer and producer chooses to sing mostly in his native language Farsi. Masterfully combining ethnic motifs with traditional elements of pop, hip-hop and dance music, Arash takes listeners on a musical journey with an oriental twist.
Arash embarked on his Broken Angel world tour at the end of 2012, playing a succession of concerts in the US, Canada, Europe and Russia. Now the singer is about to take to the stage in the Ukrainian capital.

Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy.
