A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

Ezhi and Petruccio (RU, narrative, electro), Atmosfera 360 (Velyka Vasylkivska 57/3), 21 February at 21.00
A rather artsy evening is planned in Atmosfera 360 this week, care of Russian storyteller and animator Andrey Andriyanov. Pitting Ezhi and Petruccio, created in 1997, against each other, these two cartoon characters found fame online, thanks to their deep philosophical discourse.

Depeche Mode rocked Kyivs Olympic Stadium last summer with hits Strangelove, Personal Jesus and Enjoy the Silence, as well as with tracks from their 13th and newest album, Delta Machine. The trio seemed to enjoy themselves too, as they are back this winter with what will surely be a sold-out performance.

How many Requiems do you know? Tonight, expand your list of loved canticles with another master of the genre composer, pianist, organist, writer and conductor of the Romantic era Camille Saint-Saëns. For the first time ever, his Requiem will be premiered at the National Organ House, giving you the unique opportunity to better understand the creative legacy of this French musical genius best known for his ballet The Dying Swan.

Japanese Poetry Night, House of Actors (Yaroslaviv Val 7), 20 February at 19.00
Looking to indulge your intellect while keeping your pennies in your pocket? Then you need to get down to the House of Actors, where tonight youll find a highly sophisticated evening of entertainment for all lovers of Japanese culture. The programme includes the presentation of Narrow Road to the Interior, a travel diary of a journey through northern Japan, by revered 17th century poet Matsuo Basho.

The project Techiya (Flow) at Ya Gallery presents new works by Ukrainian artist Ihor Yanovych, or as experts call him the master of national neo-avant-gardism. His paintings, using mixed techniques, convey the message that the world is in a state of flux. To express its infinite fluidity, the artist manipulates paint in such a way so as to spread or spill it over the canvas, making everything flow. Matter is not eternal, but transforms or rather flows from one state to another.

The Twelve Months (musical fairytale in 2 acts), Kyiv Theatre of Opera & Ballet for Children & Youth (Mezhyhirska 2), 19 February at 13.00
Do you know how many months there are in a year? Twelve, with one following the other. We believe that March comes after February, and May before June. But, once upon a time, a capricious queen wanted the snowdrop to flower on New Years Eve, rather than wait until April.

Basside featuring Stooki Sound (UK, trap), Yunist (Artema 37-41), 14 February at 22.00
Its a combination of hip-hop, sub-bass kick drums, layered synthesisers, cinematic strings and hi-hat time divisions in case you werent sure what trap was. Two Brits practiced in the musical sport DJs Lukey and Jelacee of Stookie Sound, are bringing their skills to Kyiv next week. Founded in 2012, the London-based duo will be supported by Ukrainian DJs Koloah, Shevchuk, Kemper, Sho, Phobia, Armo, Timkov and Costa.

Drop the Bass: Kairo Kingdom (DE, dubstep, glitch hop), Forsage (Harmatna 51a), 15 February at 23.00
Ukrainian DJ Tapolsky has proved himself as a party god in recent months, thanks to his shindigs DoneBass, 37 yearsofUgar, and Drum po Chetvergam. Back this week with a new concept Drop the Bass, he invites German DJ duo Kairo Kingdom to headline the events debut.

Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
