Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

Just a Minute

Post-Soviet football is famously corrupt and criminal in general, but thankfully there are heroic figures in the game who are not prepared to put up with the endless parade of fixed matches and bribed officials. Slava Bernikov, trainer of Russian second division team Metallurg Lipetsk, recently took drastic action when he suspected a number of senior players of involvement in match-fixing. During training he had a group of hired goons come to the stadium and assault the miscreants before shooting them with rubber bullets. The injured men were taken to hospital, while the crusading Mr. Bernikov has since been sacked by the club. We hope to see him soon in Ukraine working his magic here!

Catch Goran Bregovic in concert by Slavy Monument on Stryyska Street in Lviv 1 October at 18.00
Acclaimed Balkan musician Goran Bregovic will perform a concert in Lviv to mark the 750 anniversary of the historic West Ukrainian town. The Sarajevo born musician is following in the footsteps of his good friend Emir Kusturica, the much vaunted film maker and folk musician who has visited Ukraine on several occasions. Both these cultural figures enjoy enormous popularity in this part of the world, and can be described as leading protagonists in the Slavic Chic movement so much adored by Ukraines trendy types. There are several reasons why hip young Ukrainians, who have become accustomed to looking toward the West for inspiration, should be so enthusiastic when it comes to the likes of Bregovic, Kusturica, and the rest of their ilk. Firstly and most obviously, it comes from a culture and society similar to one which they know; nitpicking aficionados may like to highlight differences between Balkan beats and traditional Ukrainian folk music but there are similarities, the common denominator being that they are both Slavic, and therefore can be identified with. Bregovics music for example, combines gypsy folk with other genres from the peninsula, creating a rich, multi-layered and upbeat sound which acts almost as an audio microcosm of the history of the Balkans. And as throughout much of the twentieth century Balkan history was Ukrainian history, thanks to the communist bloc, the music and culture of these to bodies can be appreciated by the other as to a greater or lesser extent they are shared. Theres an element of anti-Western dogma too, though ironically the popularity of the Slavic Chic movement is greatly enhanced due to the success of its various protagonists in the likes of Britain and America.

Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
