Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

Active Kyiv
May holidays, with their nice and shiny weather, are here and theres plenty of ways to ensure they do not go to waste. You can go clubbing and partying, lap up some culture courtesy of the latest exhibitions, or hit the cinemas to see some of the hottest new releases. But considering the beautiful spring weather that we are most happily currently experiencing, perhaps the best option is to spend your time outside. And what better way to do that than to grab your bike, that piece of metal and wheels which has been peacefully resting the whole winter long, and go cycling!
Covering distances of up to 50km , weve compiled a few routes for you to take out your long lost love and work up a sweat. There is no special preparation needed: Just time, perhaps a water bottle or two, and an open mind.

Kyiv is a great nightlife city. Its got everything you could ever want in terms of theatres, clubs and wee-morning-hour haunts. Once you get out of Kyiv, however, the scenery changes and out pop a great number of places to hangout while being outdoorsy. With such a rich countryside, there is no stopping the wide open spaces youll uncover, making Ukraine in general a great al fresco place to live as well. While routes for hiking and spots for camping have yet to really catch on, weve gone in a few different directions looking for various locations to escape the concrete jungle.

Rock climbing is a physically and mentally demanding activity and one that always tests the strength, endurance, agility and balance of anyone brave enough to give it a shot. While it can be quite dangerous without the proper knowledge of technique and use of specialised equipment, here in Kyiv weve got a number of different facilities that will help you out with all of your climbing needs; making it easy, fun and safe to go as high as you dare!

With spring almost in full swing, we here at Whats On thought we would head out to paint the town literally.
Paintball is a pretty exciting pastime. Not only does it require skill and tactics, but you also need paint! Something not many other games can boast. Unfortunately, it hasnt reached the Olympic level just yet. But we think that between the coordination and the physicality needed to win, it wont be long before this ruthless competition makes it there. Intrigued? We thought you might be.

Its been a long bleak winter, in more ways than one, but spring is finally here and the skies are blue, so it might be time to think of losing a kilo or two that has sneakily accumulated on your waistline over the winter months. Here are our suggestions for some fun and healthy activities that wont cost the earth.

Swimming
This exercises every area of the body and comes without the risk of any stress or damage.  Swimming really gets you in shape. Your legs, arms, chest and stomach are all given a good work out, especially if you vary your stroke, and its excellent aerobic exercise as well. If youre the brave type, you can just head down to the Dnipro and jump in, but if youre a little more cautious you might want to try one of the citys many public pools. An hour of swimming followed by a good hot shower, and youll feel fresh as a spring daisy, and be in better shape for it. Its great fun for the whole family.

Like bungee jumping but without the elasticity, when it comes to rope jumping you also throw yourself of something high, this time hoping a normal climbing rope will break your fall making it even more of a thrill than bungee jumping if thats possible. This sport started out a long time ago in Africa when tribesmen used to jump off trees with a vine attached to their ankle as a coming of age ceremony that was meant to rid them of their fear of death.

All fans of Luc Bessons nature movie Grand Blue about aquatic life around coral reefs, scuba diving is the very thing. Putting your face in the water and forcing yourself to breathe for the first time can be a bit freaky, but once you get the hand of it the feeling of swimming deep underwater is a real thrill. There are a number of diving schools in Kyiv where you can master the basics and all of them offer trips to the Black Sea or foreign climes where you can experience the sport for real.

There not a whole lot of steep cliffs in the city, but dont let that put you off if you want to give rock climbing a go as there are indoor walls here were you can experience the exhilarating sport for the first time or brush up on your skills if you have some experience already. If you are adventurous and want to push yourself to the limits then climbing is the very thing for you. Not only is it fun, challenging and exciting, but it is also great way to keep your mind and body healthy.

Paragliding may sound and look like parachuting, but it is the exact opposite because in this sport you go up instead of down. A modern paraglider is aeronautically designed like a wing to give you lift from rising air currents, just like a glider, but because its lighter and more manoeuverable you can go higher and faster. Starting on a hill, you run as fast as your little legs can carry you and soon the paraglider will lift you into the air and you will be off looking for those wonderful thermal things that will take you high into the sky.

Everyone at some point in their lives has wanted to be Ayrton Senna or Giancarlo Fisichella and hurtle round a race track at a gazillion miles an hour with your backside only a centimetre or two off the tarmac. Of course, for most it is only ever a dream, but that dream can be partially and affordably fulfilled by going karting. Karting is one of the fastest growing forms of motor sports in the world offering speed, thrills and great competition at a very affordable price. Anyone from 8 years old upwards can give it a go making it an ideal day out for all the family.

Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
