Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

It always interests me how my friends keep their long−term relationships going. My own longest affair lasted four months. Thats never bothered me, as Im sure that someday Ill settle down. But before I do, I want to enjoy my short−term love affairs, and preserve my freedom. Even people who are into staying single, how− ever, often have a Mr or Miss Right whose im− age is burned into their consciousness. The im− age can date back to your university days or to some other period, and it tends to come back to you when another affair is over and youre on your own again. The question is, does that picture in your memory mean that that relationship was an example of true love, even if it didnt last long? One thing I know is that when the image of a certain guy I dated and broke up with two years ago starts haunting me, my friend Marina is a comfort to me. Vlad was a politician, and when we first met in his party office we liked each other immedi− ately. But unlike all my previous guys, he was a tough nut to crack. He was simply consumed with his career and thus had no time for a re− lationship.

We all love Whats On. Its a great and informative read, but few people are aware of its global popularity. Towards the end of 2007 we launched our new competition with a photo of Whats On being read by in Athens, and from there we went to New Zealand. We are kicking off this year a little closer to home (but only a little) with this photo taken by husband and wife Ken Nachbar and Tanya Gabrielyan along with Stuart, Lena and little Victoria McKenzie in Thailand. If you or any of your friends are in foreign places and spot someone reading Whats On, prefer− ably next to a recognisable landmark, then take a photo and send it to us. We will publish it here. It could be near the Eiffel Tower, the Great Pyramids, Sydney Opera House, the Grand Canyon, Edinburgh Castle, Tower of London, the Statue of Liberty, Christ the Redeemer above Rio de Ja− neiro, or the Coliseum. At the moment, the prize is getting the picture published within the pages of Kyivs best entertainment guide, but we promise to reward the best picture over the next year with a truly worthy prize!

As the old Russian proverb has it, There are some girls that a man dates, and there are oth− ers that he marries. Apparently accepting that as the Bible truth, Ukrainian guys seem to have worked out a good strategy: they date the sorts of women who dont approach the image of the ideal wife as its generally understood. These temporary women tend to be beautiful and not especially smart. They also love partying, arent particularly concerned about their careers, and lack interesting hobbies. But they have one huge advantage theyre very flexible and easy−go− ing, ready to indulge the guys theyre with in ev− erything, at any time of day. In short, they dont present a challenge. A tycoon of my acquain− tance once told me, Look what a beautiful doll I have. Obviously we were talking about his girl− friend. Shes like a Barbie doll, isnt she? I was shocked by his comments − what a world we live in now! People here, and especially women, seem more and more to be turning into objects. When this tycoon saw what must have been my stricken expression, he cried out, My wife, on the other hand shes going to be a completely different type of woman.

We all love Whats On. Its a great and informative read, but few peo− ple are aware of its global popu− larity. This week we are launching a brand new photo competition: if you or any of your friends are in foreign places and spot someone reading Whats On, preferably next to a recognisable landmark, then take a photo and send it to us. We will publish it here. We hear that perfect places to spot the rare, but widespread, lesser spotted international Whats On reader are in the vicinity of the Eiffel Tower, the Great Pyramids, Sydney Opera House, the Grand Canyon, Edinburgh Castle, Tower of London, the Statue of Liberty, Christ the Redeemer above Rio de Janeiro, and the Coliseum (but these are just suggestions, they can be found whereever you put someone in front of a famous land− mark holding a copy of the maga− zine).

Flames to dust/ Lovers to friends/ Why do all good things come to an end? Nelly Furtado once sang. And thats the way it seems to be with good things and bad things too. But then, as one of my favourite sayings goes, Dont cry that something ended, smile that it happened in the first place. Which is exactly what I used to do every time something Id expected to last forever just disappeared, an illusory thing that was impossible to catch and bring back to life. Ive always tried to smile and be positive about whatever destiny brought me. The only bad thing about my attitude, however, is that when I decide for myself that something is over, I never bother trying to give it a second breath. Once something is over, I almost prefer it to be over. Who wants his life story to be broken into small pieces and scattered about everywhere? We all prefer romantic stories that have a plot with a beginning, middle, and end a plot that you could turn into a successful soap opera on TV.

For the last eight weeks our relaxation photo competition has been creating something of a furor, and here at the Whats On office we have spent hours sifting through the piles of entries trying to find the best readers photo that truly captures the idea of relaxing. It has been a difficult task, but every week, after much discussion, we have managed to select a lucky entrant who has won a Swedish massage from Mimoza Mobile Spa at a time and place of their choosing.

Our group of friends has always got on very well with each other. Actually, I cant even remember a situation when we had a misunderstanding, or when one person did or said something to offend somebody else. Ive even always felt comfortable criticising other men around my male friend Max, knowing that hed understand where I was com− ing from. In fact, our little group is so tight that we always felt comfortable spilling our deepest secrets, knowing that it wouldnt go beyond the four of us. As for Max, Marina and Lora always like to joke that hes our fourth girlfriend. Luckily hes never taken it personally. Last week I didnt hear from Max no phone calls, no emails, no SMS − and I started worrying a little bit. It was unusual to have no contact with him. Just when I was about to get on the phone and track him down, Marina called me. Youre not going to believe this, she said excit− edly.

Whats On is delighted to offer its readers the chance to win a fabu− lous day out for you and three of your friends courtesy of Mimoza Mobile Spa! It is the last week of our fabulous competition, with eight winners winning a Swedish massage. Next week we will announce the overall winner who will win, along with three of their friends, a fine day out in a Senator Apartment (www.senator−apartments.com) rounded off with an evening of ul− timate pampering when the highly professional team of therapists at Mimoza will join you to give you manicures, pedicures, facials and massages.

Whats On is delighted to offer its readers the chance to win a fabu− lous day out for you and three of your friends courtesy of Mimoza Mobile Spa! It is week seven of our fabulous competition which will culminate just before Christmas in one lucky winner and three of their friends having a fine day out in a Senator Apartment (www.senator−apart− ments.com) rounded off with an evening of ultimate pampering when the highly professional team of therapists at Mimoza will join you to give you manicures, pedi− cures, facials and massages.

A couple of days ago some friends and I had a ladies night, and surprisingly we didnt even want to go out to a disco, as ladies often do af− ter a couple of glasses of champagne. I had a great time relaxing and chatting with my com− panions about all our romantic experiences and trying to arrive at some conclusions on the basis of all the stories we were telling. It was the most interesting part of the night. The fact is that Ive never really understand why people break up and then, like loose atoms, circulate until they bind up with other loose atoms, with whom they bond with for a while as they figure out how comfortable and happy they feel in that particu− lar bond. Then, if they realise the bond suddenly isnt working for them, they come unstuck and start drifting again, looking for another attractive atom. It would probably be easier if we figured out how to compromise and be more satisfied in our relationships rather than breaking up and feeling pain every time we did so.

Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
