Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

Ludmila Dubenyuk
Age: 22
Occupation: Linguist
Ludmilas story: I am a multi-skilled, reliable and talented translator/interpreter, who graduated from Kyiv National Linguistic University in 2012. I am currently employed as Head of the International Department at the NGO Ukrainian Palliative and Hospice Care League. Im a quick learner who can absorb new ideas and can communicate clearly and effectively with people from all social and professional backgrounds. I am well-mannered, articulate and fully aware of diversity and multicultural issues, flexible in the ability to adapt to challenges when they arise and at the same time remain aware of professional roles and boundaries.

Natalia Bogorad was on a whirlwind four-day trip to New York earlier this year, where she and a friend were non-stop in trying to get a good vibe for the city. Amid visits to jazz clubs and walks around town, the two headed up the GE Building or to the Top of the Rock, as it is lovingly referred to in Manhattan, where they captured the far-off Empire State Building in the distance.

Julia Yanchuk
Age: 23
Occupation: Lawyer
Julias story: I consider myself to be a happy person. And there are plenty of reasons for that: I live a dynamic life, Im passionate at work, I grow and learn by being surrounded by intelligent people, I widen my outlook by travelling to different parts of the world and Im blessed with a great family and reliable friends who share all my wins and losses. This sparkling state of mind and soul never leaves me because I always find reasons for maintaining it others might ignore: the cheerful smile of a stranger in the subway, a new book youve always wanted to read, unexpected catching up with a childhood friend on the street...
Nevertheless, it doesnt mean I wear pink glasses or live a perfect life, quite the opposite I stand firmly on the ground and deal with lifes sometimes cruel realities just like everyone else. I just belong to the people who with all their hearts believe that every cloud has a silver lining. And when you believe you see.

One of our younger readers writes in this week with photos from Budapest. While travelling, 10-year-old Yana Shakhova and her family happened upon the Chain Bridge, a suspension bridge that spans the River Danube linking Buda and Pest. Nice shot!

Iryna Kostenko
Age: 21
Occupation: Law and social relations
Irynas story: First of all I love my girls my mother and sister! They are my closest friends and support! My Yorkshire terrier Jan holds the next stage in my life. Training in the gym with my favourite music playing in my earphones, the cinema, horror films, psychology, and spending time with my friends dancing, picnics, camping, and fishing these are all these things that cheer and inspire me. Also, I have been involved in arm wrestling training and won in competitions between Kyiv universities. I like people with a good sense of humour. I believe that no matter what happens it can be resolved without tears only optimism! I live with a fresh mind, but believe in fairytales, and I hope that one of them comes true in my life!

Were pretty pumped about this months winner, Valeriy Negrov. Not only has he got a shot of a fabulous landmark, the London Tower Bridge, hes sitting there with his Whats On as though our little rag is the most important thing in the world at that moment! Klas!

Despite a hugely busy schedule over the last few months, the lovely Maria Griffin took a little time to enjoy the sights of London with yours truly. Ironically, Big Ben looks on in the distance keeping track of the time.

Liubov Lukianenko
Age: 28
Occupation: Manager
Liubovs story: The interesting thing about me is that I am unique there is no other Liuba in the whole world! And with such a mood I try to live my every day as if it were a sunny day, whatever the forecast says for the present day. I try to surround myself with positive energy through communication with those people who are bright, enthusiastic, and open-minded. I try to enrich myself through receiving useful information, new life experiences, hobbies, passions, love, friendship, and commitments. I adore my cat because he is the most honest person in the whole world!!!

Tanya Riabova writes in this week with a pic of the famous Grenoble-Bastille Cable Car. Known as Les bulles (the bubbles) in France, these egg-shaped vehicles were the first urban cable car in the world and connect the fortified mountain La Bastille with the city centre. Once at the top, views of the charming city of Grenoble are visible too.

We heart Olga Kuzub this month, thanks to her pic with yours truly on the shores of Batumi, Georgia. She takes home two return tickets care of Ukraine International Airlines as her prize. There will be another winner for October announced next week stay tuned, it could be you!

Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
