Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

Whats Up?
Meat Katie, Cinema Club (1 Entuziastiv Vul), 15 July at 22.00
Over the years the curiously named Meat Katie has worked with the likes of The Chemical Brothers, Asian Dub Foundation, Death in Vegas, and Ken Ishii & The DubPistols to name but a few, adding his calling card break beats for feisty and funky remixes which generally have the crowd going hard at it in a matter of seconds.

Husband and wife writing partners Sergey and Marina Dyachenko only began writing together a little over ten years ago, and then only for fun. Since then though the pair have gone on to spearhead the Ukrainian sci-fi and fantasy revival, and such is their successthat their latest book has been chosen by Ruslana as the vehicle to help launch her new spaced-out image.

The collapse of the Soviet UNI0N and the death of the Pioneers did not mean the end of youth organizations. Today, thousands of youngsters regularly meet to take part in numerous outdoor activities organised by Plast, a Ukrainian scouting movement with a long past and which has enjoyed growing popularity over the past decade.

Scientist, educator, and former speaker of his parliament, Armenian Ambassador Armen Hachatryan is, like most of his fellow countrymen, a man of the world steeped in the culture and traditions of his homeland. Here he talks about Kyivs beauty, its citizens hospitality, and all this European capital business.

Top Odessa nightclub Ibiza was allegedly the scene of a Wild West style shootout involving the son of Kyiv mayor Leonid Cherevitsky. Itâ?s believed that friends and bodyguards of Stepan Chernivitsky engaged in a spot of post-cocktail fisticuffs before guns were drawn and, in classic Yosemite Sam fashion, bullets fired at the ceiling. The club initially contacted the militsia but have since denied that the event taking place, which seems somewhat at odds with a police statement which said that an investigation is now underway.

Chaotic construction works taking place in the heart of historic Lviv could lead to UNESCO withdrawing the downtown area's "listed" status. Areas such as Rinok Square, Cathedralna Square, and Ruska Street currently have UNESCO World Heritage Status, which in theory prevents the erection of new buildings with only essential renovation being permitted.

Rumours are currently circulating around the Ukrainian capital concerning the future of urban oasis and rough and ready pleasure paradise Gydropark. Itâ?s being reported that 2 hectares of the siteâ?s total 20.5 hectares have been sold off to an as yet unnamed property developer planning to build a series of country houses.

The mass exodus of Polish workers to the UK has lead to top Polish governments calling on their government to do something in order to avert a potentially catastrophic labour shortage. More than half a million Poles, ranging from qualified doctors to handymen, have moved to Britain since Poland joined the European UNI0N two years , fleeing an unemployment rate of 18 percent, the highest of the 25-nation bloc. This mass migration however has left the Polish labour market chronically undermanned in some spheres, with even multinational giants such as Siemens unable to attract qualified recruits.

Flabby French film star Gerard Depardieu has pulled out of starring in a Ukrainian motion picture in favour of appearing in a Russian TV miniseries. The larger-than-life Gallic actor announced at the Moscow Cinema Festival that he was pulling out of the adaptation of Gogols "Taras Bulba", claiming that the project was simply too large for him to take on.

Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.
