Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

Whats Up?
Barmy builders in the West Ukrainian city of Ivano-Frankivsk mistakenly left a crane behind after completing a six storey building. The building apparatus remains slap back in the middle of the building, and plans to move it have reached a dead end, as to do so would risk the structural integrity of the building itself but also of nearby historic houses, many of which date back to the eighteenth century.

Fresh from giving Lvivs local government a firm tongue lashing over continued building in historic areas UNESCO has moved onto the Ukrainian capital itself, threatening to take both Lavra and St. Sophias off its list of World Heritage Sites.

Cute Soviet cartoon fur-ball Cheburashka will be honoured with a statue in the town which a Russian scientist claims was the birthplace of the cult carton character. Short on friends scientist Sergiy Petrov says that he has carried out extensive research into the origins of the fictional childrens favourite, leading him to the conclusion that Cheburashka did not come from Africa as is commonly believed, but from the town of Ulianovska, which was also the birthplace of Lenin.

Dnipropetrovsk boffin Valentin Bulahov has come out of the proverbial woodwork claiming that he is in possession of the largest pair of elk antlers in the world. The impressive animal head accessories weigh in an impressive 1 metre 30cms and weigh an incredible 90kgs, stats which the professor of zoology believes must be a world record.

The wonderful world of Disney animation is helping to unite Ukraine in these troubled times, at least according to the people responsible for screening Disney/Pixels latest cartoon blockbuster Cars. The language Ukrainian version, featuring the voices of Olga Sumska and Ostap Stupka, was watched by 15 percent more people than its Russian language counterpart with perhaps the biggest surprise coming out of the supposedly Russian language stronghold of Donetsk, where 16 percent more people chose the Ukrainian version over the Russian. The same was the case in Dnipropetrovsk, where the Ukrainian language film enjoyed a 36 percent lead over the Russian version, though Kyivites and residents of Kharkiv preffered to watch the cartoon in Russian. UKRAINIAN HOUSE Newly appointed US Ambassador Mr. William B. Taylor addressed diplomats and leading businessman at a specially organised American Chamber of Commerce assembly 7 July. During the meeting Mr. Taylor discussed numerous questions concerning US-Ukrainian relations, including the current hot topic of Ukraine's possible NATO membership.

Rose Garden, Gryshko National Botanical Gardens (1 Timiryazevska)
August will be met with a stunning display of roses at the Botanical Gardens in Pechersk, giving visitors the chance to see these most beautiful of flowers in a rather more aesthetic setting than the usual bunches wrapped in plastic by metro entrances. The display is sure to stir the soul of even the most ardent concrete jungle dweller, while those in the agriculture know will have fun identifying the 150 types of flower on display, including 23 varieties of dog-rose. The Rose Garden is open from 8.30 to 22.00 everyday bar Mondays, and is located to the left of the main entrance.

Ukrainian World Forum, Kyiv, 18-20 August
1730 representatives speaking for the estimated twenty million Ukrainians currently living around the world will gather in Kyiv to discuss the state of the Ukrainian nation in its broadest sense this summer.

A giant in the history of Russian art and precursor to the Silver Age, the works of Mikhail Vrubel were unlike anything that came before. Rejecting the Realist school which dominated the scene during the mid-nineteenth century, Vrubel combined Byzantine traditions with the latest techniques from France and Germany to produce a series of stunning works which appear modern to this day. Many of the great mans paintings drew on folklore and mythology of Russia, Ukraine, and the Caucuses, with his Demon series reaching new levels in emotional depth and avant-garde style.

PIONEER New standards were set in the glitz, glamour, sexiness, and downright strange stakes when anybody who was anybody, and quite a few who arenâ?t, turned out for the Medoff Nightlife Awards, which took place 5 July at Pioneer. Gongs were given out to clubs across the country and those â?˜workingâ? in the nightlife industry, while guests divided their time between downing Medoff based cocktails, posing for the camera, air-kissing, and enjoying a show programme which included all the usual antics plus a Kyiv first; caviar wrestling!

Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
