A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

Superheroes of Rock - Coming Soon
Supergroup (US, instrumental rock), Bingo Club (Peremohy Pr 112), 26 October at 19.00
One of the worlds most famous drummers, Modern Drummer Hall of Famer and Modern Drummer Magazine 26-award holder, Mike Portnoy, is coming to Kyiv with his Supergroup. The term supergroup stared appearing more readily in the late 60s, meaning a rock group made up of musicians already popular for their work in other bands. This particular group is made up of bassist Billy Sheehan (Talas, Mr Big, Niacin), guitarist Tony Macalpine (popular for his multiple solo projects) keyboardist Derek Sherinian (Dream Theatre, Billy Idol, Alice Cooper) and of course, drummer Portnoy (Dream Theatre, Transatlantic, Neal Morse).

There is no woman in Ukraine who wouldnt be excited by this musician; both his charisma and his unstoppable energy turn general music lovers into fanatic admirers! A real man for all seasons, Baskov knows how to excite his audience and performs both classic operatic arias as well as pure pop. Meet the Russian macho man, famous for his musical experiments and more, tonight!

Since his début performance at the Chervona Ruta festival in 1993, Ukrainian singer Oleksandr Ponamarev has remained one of the countrys most popular and talented songsters. Thanks to his beautiful voice, he holds the award for Best Singer of the last 20 years from YUNA held earlier this year. But even more than that, the lyrics he sings and the music he plays are not the pop to which weve become accustomed among the current Ukrainian music scene. Presenting his acoustic programme this evening, called Another Version, were about to see yet another side of the Ukrainian superstar.


The Crystal Coming - Coming Soon
Crystal Castles (Canada, electro), Crystal Hall (Dniprovskiy Spusk 1), 19 September at 20.00
Comprising Ethan Kath and Alice Glass, the two Crystal Castles originals met when Glass, then 15, was singing in a local punk band. Kath asked Glass to add vocals to some tracks he had been working on. They recorded them, uploaded them and forgot all about them. However, through the Internet, these songs found their audience, and offers from record labels started pouring in. Having gone on to release many EPs and two eponymous albums, in 2008 and 2010, their debut album even crashed into NMEs Top 100 Greatest Albums of the Decade, at a highly respectable #39.

Taking only the best features from the world famous Venice Biennale, Mystetskiy Arsenal is producing the first ever Biennale Ukraine. The long name given to the art fair aims at highlighting the long history of Ukrainian art, which has risen out of the ashes from its fair share of misery and decay.

Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
