Full of Hot Air
Growing up, I was always a passionate reader of Jules Verne, and having reached the tender age of 25, I’ve still yet to fall out with the adventurous spirit all of his books are imbued with. What I’ve found, however, is that the excitement and serenity that exist between the pages of those books can be had in real life, all you have to do is make an appointment.

Home of the World’s Best Hackers |
|
|
Stories of gangs of computer hackers being traced to Ukraine are plentiful these days, and now it has been acknowledged that the country’s hackers are the best in the world.
InZero, a US based web security company, set up a laptop in a secure room in Washington D.C. a while back with the intention of using the device as a honey pot for all the world's busy bee hackers. Once the device was in place with all InZero’s security software loaded, the company made it known through the murky world of hacker online chat forums that there was a document on it that they would not be able to access.

|
|
With the challenge duly laid down, the global hacking community set about the task, and so far there have been 11 million attempts to gain access.
Most of those attempting to gain access announced their intentions by sending emails to the laptop, attachments enclosed of course, asking the recipients to view them. Playing along, and wanting to give everyone the best chance possible, those at InZero duly opened all attachments they received.
While this approach tends to separate out those hackers known as ‘White Hats’ – people who like to gain access to secret places but usually without any nefarious intentions – it was thought that ‘Black Hats’ (villains) would hesitate at entering such a contest for fear of breaking cover.
However, it seems that many of them couldn’t resist the challenge, and the laptop received numerous hacking attempts from proxy servers that mask the originators locations.
The results? Ukraine took first place, Russia second and America third. It seems Ukraine has some really talented people when it comes to computers!

Corruption: Good or Bad?
Corruption is endemic in Ukraine, of that there is no doubt, and its presence in the higher echelons of government is dragging the country down to its knees. But it permeates all levels of society, and is often the way many a low paid government official provides for himself and his family. And if you ask most Ukrainians about corruption they will smile and say, “If the answer is no, and you really need it to be yes, you can make it yes.”

A Wine Story
I read somewhere that the motivation behind the drinking of wine equals five: the arrival of a friend, one’s present or future thirst, the excellence of the wine, or any other reason. It certainly could be argued that the first, second, third and/or fifth reasons are excellent arguments as to why the good people of Ukraine treat themselves with this little indulgence. With regards to the fourth, however, the jury is still out.
